**ORIGINAL POST**
i really don't have time for a challenge right now, but i couldn't resist since it is such a cool premise. this guy is a memeber of the Planetary Calvery who's job it is to explore new worlds and lead the fight against native life forms. i don't think i will have time for his vehicle, or his "native" adversaries, but i want to make those after the competition is over.

RedRepublik,
Great idea. Planetary Calvary has some really cool ideas to it. Like the sketch. Good luck to you on your progress. Looking forward to seeing it.

i modeled the boots last night in mudbox and zbrush, then polycrunched them. it took about 3-4 hours

cool boots!
the concept is great also looking forward to this one and how it will turn out. Man I gota spend more time zbrushing lol.

thanks RO and wizo. hopefully i will have something new to show tomorrow. i feel like i will be jumping around with the costume parts, but i should probably rough in the body so i can keep the proportions in check.

i worked on the gloves last night. admittedly, they aren't as detailed as the boots, but i realized that to meet the deadline, i have to make some concessions.

i'm still trucking along on the high poly. i just have the gear and the head to do now. i made a low poly base mesh for the head just as a stand in.

thanks blacker. i am using both mud box and zbrush with very little max work(except for the head), so it goes very quickly. the thing that worries me is building a good, clean, low poly mesh, and texturing it in the time remaining. oh and the rigging. i hate rigging.

You've still got two weeks left, plenty of time with the speed you're doing the high poly at, hehe.
If it's mostly zb/mb, what are you starting off with... zspheres?

08-01-2007, 07:32 AM
wow it looks awesome so far, my only crit is that where the pants go into the boots, looks a bit skinny, i think the pants need to "puff out" more right above the boots

Love those boots but so far everything is kicking mucho butt here. :)
RedRepublik
08-02-2007, 04:23 PM
thanks for the comments.
Ramseus, i usual start with a 10 minute mesh in max, just to get a rough shape with even quads, then take it to mudbox to do the broad forms. after i am happy with the overall shape, i export the highest level and bring that into zbrush to do the final detailing on it.
here is the latest progress. i decided to get all the parts in there before taking anything else to completion. now i can detail out the pants and other things. well i guess i need to figure out whatthe straps and hoses connect to in the back. after that, the head will be the next big thing to tackle.

You are amazingly quick and your talent is just wow Red. I have never worked in either mudbox or zbrush yet, just max. I definately need to get cracking and dig into those programs and learn my way around and adding them to my skill set and work flow.
Really just some amazing work! I hope yu have enough time to finish.

i made the high poly gun over the last couple of days. i started with a rough mudbox sculpt to work out the forms and then remeshed it in max. i wish i had done a concept first, because it probably would have taken me less time. i was going for something with a familiar 6 shooter feel, but futuristic.

whoa! kickass quality! Pretty neat job with the gun, I think it really has space western feel to it. For the character I would have added some cowboyish element (If he is in a cavalry I think a nice US civilwar style hat would fit nicely! ;)

i made some progress on the low poly and the texture. el fuego, i liked your idea so much that i went for it. i will put the crossed swords on top of the hat to make it look even more like a calvary hat. the lighting, pose, etc are far from done. there is alot of tweaking to be done, textures to finish, eyeballs to make, etc.

He looks really amazing! I can almost see him as the next Han Solo :> it somehow has that charisma that most of the game/movie/tv characters seems to lack these days. I was/am a huge fan of Firefly tv-series and he could fit right into that world with exellence!
And I have to say that usually my advises go wrong but that one fits perfectly!

Gotta agree there. His legs also look way too thin where they go into the boots.
Anyway, very nicely done and good luck.
~M~
This is seriously one of the coolest characters I have seen. Awsome design, modeling and texturing, no crits.
The only thing is that I thought he looked cool without the eyes aswell, I mean, like with a dark area around the eyes, can I suggest some dark glasses or some sort? Just a thought though.
RedRepublik
08-17-2007, 12:15 AM
tim, mindrot, and others that have commented on the boots: you are right. what i was going for was a riding pant look with larger boots to help the silhouette(sp?) but it turned out just looking like his legs got really skinny going into large boots. live and learn.
bird: glad you found it. next time i will let you know i am entering a competition :)
pkt: i think i wated to long to put the eyes in his head, because by the time i did, i didn't have time to make adjustments. i originally thought about giving him goggles, but ditched that idea. i like the thought of dark aviator glasses though. maybe someday...

Hi RedRepublik,
Awesome entry man, this model is reaaly well executed
I was wondering if you did all the textures on the Hipoly to at the end bake both the normal map and the diffuse (texture) on the lowpoly ?
If so, do you think it's a better workflow then just bake the normal map and then create the texture according to the lowpoly .....

Fantastic work I love it till the end, I would like to ask you about the uv unwrap and the accurete painted texture method over the small and dificult places.
Which programs did you use to uv and unwrap the mesh and how did you paint the wrinckels in the right "perfect" place? (Is very dificult to be accurate in some complicated places like the nostril, ears and eyes).

Bentllama: don't worry, i am definatly putting in the time on halo wars! until Halo 3 comes out and i spend all my time playing that.
Arizaga: i built base meshes for everything in max, and then exported them to mudbux (i didn't have zbrush 3 when i first started this piece). In Mudbox i painted in all the wrinkles and details. i used the high poly assets as a guide to build the low poly parts, then i generated normals and ambient occlusion. i used the ambient occlusion as a guide to paint the textures, so they would line up perfectly with the normal map detail. For the head, however, I unwrapped the base mesh, and took it into zbrush 3 to detail it and texture it by projecting some photos as a guide, and then painting over them. by texturing it in zbrush i was able to paint everyting very accuratly. when it came time to do the low poly head, i optimized the lowest subdivision, changed the uv's to fit with the rest of the character, and projected the normal map and the color map onto the low poly mesh. by doing this, you are guarunteed to have textures that match up with the normal map details.
hope that helps

awesome stuff man, tis a shame/ pity you don't get to do characters... but there are alot of overly skilled peeps where you work :) Would be nice to just be around the company of all those guys.
Your guy is looking really awesome, any crits i have are small.
the pose:
the back leg, appears like its pushign off, but it doesn't feel like there is much weight to it. Possibly bringing the unarmed hand inward with the outter part of the hand facing the camera a tad more.. as if he's more on the move (which will make it a bit more of a "D" shape). PEW PEW!
the model/ texture:
Looks really great the accesories are all really great, and feel thought out. I know its still wip, but few things i notice, the hat/pants/ boots could use the same wear as the jacket.
And it would be nice to see a longer sleve on the coat, or having the under shirt stick through some, bringing that orange back into play.
Anyway, it's dope and i love all the design, the pants and boots, esp.
