Title: Stylised Female Character
Name: Antony Ward
Country: United Kingdom
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop, Silo
This character has evolved through the life of the project. She started out as a simple cartoon style character, flat, with no muscle tone but as I worked on her I found myself working in more details.
So, one thing remained constant and that was she would be a straight sub`D model as I wanted to work on my modeling skills. Along the way I also played around with the fast_skin shader and Maya hair, but resorted to painting the hair by hand afterwards.
Enough waffle...she started in Silo, then moved into Maya for the render before I finished her in Photoshop.
Enjoy!

Thanks Rofideo. "Painted by hand" means I drew it in Photoshop, over the top of the rendered image. I also had to touch up a few problem areas too...
Ianloarndo, thanks for the rating :) her proportions are different because she is stylised, so she isn't meant to look like a real human female.

I actually wanted to ask you about the hair as well....you said you've used Maya hair....looks like you've spent a lotta time on it, cus I spent a little time playing around with hair but couldn't get any good results. Any chance you'll be bringing out a book with a section on how to use Maya hair soon....

WOW textures and hair looks really good Anchuvi.. Any advice on how i can get my models hair to look like your??

Hi...
The hair is simply painted in Photoshop, more or less did it in a lunch time. I did try Maya hair but it ended up being too time consuming, trying to get a descent style and playing with the shaders.
I knew this character would be used for stills and not an animation so I opted to just add the hair after, when I touched up the image...
I`m quite happy with the results, its the first time I have painted hair properly. One thng that did help was reference...I was lucky enough to find an image which almost matched the lighting I had set up in the image.

Just wanted to add...this is one of the images I used as reference for her hair - Hair Ref (http://www.hair-styles.org/elisha-cuthbert-hairstyles-002.html). This is quite a good site for hairstyes...

Wow, now that does make a huge difference doesn't it....its always so difficult to try and model hair....I had a really hard time trying to model hair that I could later animate and have always wanted to find an easier way to make hair that looked good, in still images....haven't ever painted her, but have never really found good reference.
Thanks for sharing that Antony, really appreciate you telling me about that link.

No problem...this tutorial helped too - Painting Hair (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?threadid=259468) although I broke it down a little and just built up colour layers before adding the highlights...
Glad to help!

Thanks for the advice Anchuvi. I would live to use what you did to get your resaults on your model, but i dont think it will work for what i have planned, but i will give it a try any way. Also i'm still waiting on you to add me to your gamer list :D if you would like me to send you my frend request again i will be happy to.

That hand painted hair looks great as does the comic style proportions of her body. My only crit would be that the posing of the arms could be a little different to complement the body better, also you could make the hands a bit more expressive to give her a softer or harder feel.

Thanks Butcher...I plan on doing some more pieces with this character, different settings and poses ect. so I will keep that in mind :)

Great work Anthony...She's great. I really like the way the hair turned out, sometimes 3D hair can be such a pain in the ass.
Great character and style and the skin shader looks cool too :)
I'd love to see more of her face though.

She looks like Abbey Chase from DangerGirl. Was that the inspiration, or just a coincadence?

No coincidence, she was originaly based on the work of J Scott Campbell but once I had the basic proportions I took her in another direction.

Thanks guys, I cant believe all the positive feedback. I must be doing something right :)
GaiXyn, the problem I was having with the hair is I was making things complicated for myself. Pick four main colours covering the main range of the hair. All I did was blur a photo and pick colours from it.
Then just build up the layers a colour at a time.
Thats stylised alright! Man great modeling there! This is a very good model indeed!
Hot stuff man keep it up!

I havent really worked with maya hair... but I think its pretty close to max hair and fur..... Can you grow it from splines....? If you can build a cage around the head and using real world scales always helps because it makes the calculations easier for the engine..... Give it a shot man .... maybe the next still could have her hair blowing in the wind and exposing a tattoo of smoking gun on the nape of her neck.....
Anchuvi
07-27-2007, 08:34 AM
sahilmalhotra17 you read my mind ;)
Maya hair does use splines and dynamics, all of which guide the paintFX hair. I will give it another go at some stage but I didn't want to get caught up in details at this point, I have loads of other stuff going on at the moment...
I`ve made a start on my next piece so may start a WIP thread...not sure though.
The next will be loosly based on the fathom comics, like this -

So this time you will see her front ;)

This is very, very nice!
Lovely proportions, and nice face. I think her arse is much too flat though - needs perking and rounding up!
Great lighting and shader work as well.

Hi Anchuvi i'm trying to create a model like your comic book girl model, but i'm not happy with out it is coming along can you give me some pointers on what i need to do to get it to look as good as your model?

Hi Onslaught...have you got COD4?
Anyway, your model is coming along nicely, you`ve done a great job on her front. I would say that her rib cage is a little angular and flat so you could round that off a bit.
Her back and buttocks need some work, the best thing to suggest would be to find some reference on female backs and work from them...
I don't know if it will help but I used Silo to model mine, it was much easier to create her in this compared to Maya.
Hope this helps! Merry Christmas!

Sorry Anchuvi i dont have COD4, but it is one of thoes games i plan to buy soon. Thanks for the advice on my model i will see if i can get some reference pic to help me get more detail in thoes areas, and it means alot to me that you think it does not look bad. I'm happy that i'm on a good start. Also i'm using 3ds max to create the model, but i will look into Silo. I will post some more renders in a WIP soon i hope you can still give me some advice on it when ever you have time and your around in the forums.
