View Full Version : seperate shadow lights...
delarge 03-26-2003, 03:08 PM hi all.
in softimage|3D it is possible to set the light-multiplier to near zero [0.001] and shadow density up to 200 or so to have the light just casting shadow but with no illumination.
how is this possible in max? tried different setups already but no solution yet. can anyone help?
cheers and thanks ;)

Hmm, I've actually heard of many ways to do this, one being using a negative light and white shadow density. However, I would tend to think if you turned on shadow maps and set the light to not affect Diffuse and Specular, it would do what you're talking about.

hmm, as I mentioned... I tried different setups that made sense to me... like multiplier=1, affect diff/spec -> off, high density and black shadows. then negative density with multiplier to zero, white shadowcolor with negative density and multiplier to zero.... but nothing works...
any idea?

I don't have MAX where I'm working right now, so I can't check for sure. If no one mentions anything today, I'll double-check it at home tonight. I know it's possible and have done it in the past.

Have you tried setting the light multiplier to a negative number:shrug:

you could also try using include/exclude and use include shadow casting only:bounce:

Hi Delarge
If I really understand you, you want to simulate a shadow only light.
If I’m right, create a spotlight with shadow-casting on.
Then create an exact copy of the first light in the exact same position.
Turn shadow-casting off (only for the second light) and make the multiplier negative.
For example if the multiplier of the first light was 1,0 the second one have to be –1,0.
The result is that the second light, take away the illumination of the first one and you have a shadow only source. Hope this helps.
