Hi guys.

I plan to model a few buildings/skyscrapers for a personal project in maya. And since the search feature isn't working for me right now, I decided just to ask here. Are there any good tips you have for modeling skyscrapers? What would your method or workflow be? I plan for the models to be fairley detailed, and also plan texture them later. Also, they are all going to be seen from an outside view only. I'm not trying to make exact replicates of existing buildings, but I plan to use some for reference (duh:)). So, any good ideas?

Thanks in advance!

So I started modeling a building. I only modeled one side, and I am starting to think that wasn't such a good idea . But I am kind-of happy with the look of that one side :). Is there a way to duplicate those changes to the other sides? Also, I'm still interested in what your workflow would be, and if there are any tutorials that you could send me a link too. Thanks!

Ah, another one, I am pumping these out tonight! Hopefully I can get a few more in. Still looking for some tips. Thanks!

A few more. This is fun. I modeled two more buildings. Next I plan to do an Empire State Building style one. It'll have less detail, but still be realistic. Looks like I will need to start getting tips on texturing too.

Some more models. I remembered purchasing this book a while back called Learning Maya 7: The Modeling and Animation Handbook, and it included $460 worth of TurboSquid models, and some where skyskrapers. Hurray! I know this is a modeling section of the forum, but could anyone point in the right direction to get started with texturing these?

I modeled the huge skyscraper for my scene! I want to get these ready for texturing tonight. I assume that means UV unwraping all of these. Whats the best way to unwrap and texture buildings? Or do I not unwrap them at all? Should I repost this in the texturing section of the forum, since I am at that point? or maybe the WIP section? I kind-of feel like I am talking to my self here:).

Thanks in advanced for any replies.

So I asked somewhere else about the best way to unwrap these buildings. One guy replied telling me that I should seperate the windows from the building? Is this a good idea? Also, can I get this thread moved to the WIP 3d stills section?

Yes, you are talking to yourself right now. LOL! You stated what software you are using, but you have not provided an image depicting what your area of concern is. You stated that you are happily modeling away, what is your ultimate goal, a game, a realistic scene, etc.? How did you construct your model, are they modular in concept to make the texturing easier, or is every door and window something different? We are all busy, so if you want help, please give us a clear idea what you want.

Take a look at a friends images of his skyscrapers, everything is modeled in great detail.

Hey vkirchner,
I actually finished this project up. It was for a contest for Heinz. I would post the video, but it really isn't much good :). I was happy with the render bellow though. The turtle and stars and earth are images.

Nicely done! The first image has a very interesting view angle with the planet in the background. With a little work on the texturing, you could have a nice little city scene that you could market.

:applause:
