so after asking many questions about UVs and checkerboard patterns, Eric at http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=25&t=518738

said that [my interpretation] that nothing funky is going on with the checkerboard texture map that i'm using to figure out how to use the least amount of poly vertices when modifying from nurbs on my way to subDs.

in the pic here, i used the original nurbs model on it's own layer in reference mode as a virtual mold by which to pull the vertices of the modification results in poly and subD, since those tend to really lose their shape if you want to have as light a model as possible. I'm trying to keep the subD model as close to the nurbs as much as possible, so that means cutting the poly vertices count in half if I want to stay on a 0 and 1 level only for modeling. [skeleton binding happens only on 0 in subD, i think..read it in a book about maya strangely enough.]

the trickiest part here was the eyes, but i think it'll be okay in subD. the original nurbs head model in nurbs can be seen at http://c000be.cgsociety.org/gallery/474241/

now go back to your britney and lindsay. and is it just me, or am i wrong to think that Paris "going green" is totally going to ruin everything?
