Title: French WWI Battleship COURBET
Name: Eric Rossignol
Country: France
Software: Lightwave 3D, Photoshop

Hi all,

This is the French Battleship COURBET, launch in 1911. Typical of the Dreadnought era, the COURBET was the first french attempt to come up with a "All Big Gun Ship".
This ship is entirely polygon made, with a count of about 1.5 millions, and rendered using radiosity. The scene is kept as neutral as possible - as usual for my battleships renders - so that the "Object" properly stands out. I hope U like it. Crits and comments are welcomed.

Cheers

Wow...that's amazing work. How do you judge the scale on things so large? Sometimes I feel like I just get lucky haha. For a destroyer I modeled I just got the overall scale and did it by eye for detail, but it's hit and miss it seems.

Very nice job, well modeled. I agree with you rendering it on a neutral set like that - does make it stand out and draws you in to the finer details.

Hi CGArtist314,

Well, the French Ministry of Defense has been kind enough to scan around 500 sets of plans of retired ships of the French Navy, and to post them on their website for free download. The Courbet was among them... This helps to get the right proportions of the ship :-)

Thanks for your comments, btw !!

Nice work, you have a good amount of detail on the model. Nice texturing too, how long do you think it took this to render?

Maybe sometime you could add some water with this ship. :D

Hi Eomer41,

The image took 2h15 to render in 2048 x 1600, under LW 9.0. It could have taken half of this under LW 9.2, but I could not get the new render properties of LW 9.2 to achieve the same result than in LW 9.0... Image is always blured in some ways... strange.

As for the water, I would certainly not have the Courbet floating. It is extremely difficult to me to achieve water that does not look fake, and, I as standed in my initial comment for the image, I'm mainly interesed in the "object" in Itself, not in environement.

Thanks for your comments !, anyway.

Cheers
