View Full Version : OBJ Export

I need to translate some .3ds and obj models for use in Electric Image. I'm using C4D as the translator since it reads both formats very well and using Riptide for export. The UV texture export is working but the models look poorly tesselated when exported. I direct import of an original .3ds model into EI looks great, but when passed thru C4D it's shading looses it's smoothness.

Any clues what's going on and how to prevent it?

TIA,
Terry

Without seeing any images, it's a bit hard to say (could be a couple different things)...

I'd recomend using Riptide for both import and export of .obj files (if you're not already).

Also, I don't recall if .3ds files have Vertex Normal information in them or not, but you might try disabling writing Normals when you export a .obj file.

Also, I'm not sure if EI is reading the .mtl (material) files that Riptide wrtes out, but that conversion is not an exact science, so specularity/ambient and a few similar settings may be interpreted differently by EI, but that shouldn't really affect the smoothness/facetedness of a model - the things that typically affect that are:

- Vertex Normals.
- Actual mesh geometry (ie. whether vertices are welded at the corners, etc).
