View Full Version : Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition characters I did
Ancient-Pig 07-24-2007, 03:38 AM Hey guys - here is some of the character work I did for Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition. You may recognize some of the likenesses from the very first version of the game (1994)
The character concepts were done by Crystal Dynamics/Eidos. The modeling and texturing were done by myself...
It was a fun project to work on, and I hope I get the opportunity to work with Crystal Dynamics again in the future...
-edit- the knife and pistols being held were done by Crystal Dynamics -edit-

Those are fantastic. Not a big fan of Tomb Raider but I love the models here.
How long did it take you from modeling to texturing to complete the models?

Very awesome work. Could/would you please give some quick advice on unrwapping. I seem to have a hard time getting stuff to not be stretched. Again, wonderful work.

Wow AP lookin great man. I love the first one. Your texture painting is always very inspiring. I would have guessed you would have added more shadows to the textures? Good job. I would like to see them in game.

Hey thanks guys - glad you all dig them...
Tips on UV Mapping? Go with planar mapping bits and pieces of the mesh, and then stitching them together in the UV Editor window. Throw a checker map on the mesh so you can see where inconsistencies occur.
There will always be stretching on an organic mesh (unless you planar map each individual face and leave them seperate... seam city!!). So the real name of the game is how to hide the stretching and seams as best as possible. Under the chin... behind the ear...inside the mouth... in the armpit.. they all work :)
Keep straight lines on objects that have straight lines. It's a great way to fake in more detail via pixel painting. IE- a 1 pixel line that runs straight horizontal or vertical (or exactly 45 degrees) looks much sharper than a 1 pixel line at an odd angle. Look at Kid's hat - the amount of UV space that hat takes up is extremely small. I got sharp detail across by limiting the 1 pixel lines to horz and vert, and even used a slight UV nudge to introduce a really fine black line that seperates the front of the hat from the back... get creative with UVs!
I'm not going to post the flats for these characters, however please have a look at my website for examples of how I UV map:
http://www.pig-brain.com
I didn't want to overshadow these characters because the in-game lighting was pretty good... in all the pics above, the characters are being displayed at full brightness

Ace work on the texturing Ancient-Pig. That 'Kid' looks great, lovely model as well.
I'm not too crazy about some of the general shapes of the second and third characters though- their silhouettes are too straight for my liking and some of their limbs are a bit too tube like.
Anyway... keep up the great work.

Thanks guys :)
Urglet - din dumma svensk!!!
DNorth - thanks man - hey I thought you currently worked at Kush games for some reason. I was there 4-5 years back.. we worked with VC quite a bit
Ultra - The images shown are the ones that were approved by Eidos... I doubt they'd approve of me showing wires and/or flats as that could easily be deemed 'trade secrets.' Trust me, the wires are nothing spectacular, so you're not really missing out :P

Naw, I was a VC for a long time, then I went down to EA for a couple years and now I'm back at VC. Anyway, always really liked your work, especially the stuff from Gun.

Brilliant stuff once again man.
TRAE definitely shines much brighter with your character work.
When are you going to make another tutorial? Maybe some video capture sessions in PS?

Wow....I've been such a huge fan of Lara through all her games and I absolutely loved the latest game....and the animation and modeling.
From an old tomb raider fan to you and all the other guys at Crystal Dynamics - I think you guys did a really good job.
The modeling and texturing looks really great....I actually thought some of the guys were hot - but don't tell anyone.

Amazing work m8
Can I ask you how long did the modelling alone take for a single model and the texturing aswell. (I.e. How long was the deadline given etc).
Thanks and keep up the good work too :)

Wow plugged! Thanks a ton LilD - glad you dig the work :)
eblondin - Thanks, we all made the project together, and it was a great effort. Another tutorial? I plan on delving back into the ZBrush side of things pretty soon, so Maybe I'll add to the extreme saturation of Zmodeling tuts.. or someone was requesting a cloth texturing tutorial.. maybe one of those.
Rafis - Thanks a bunch. I actually don't work at Crystal Dynamics, but at another company called Buzz Monkey ( http://www.buzzmonkey.com (http://www.buzzmonkey.com) ). We worked on Tomb Raider Anniversary in tandem with the talented Crystal Dynamics crew.
btw everyone, BuzzMonkey is looking to ramp up:
http://www.buzzmonkey.com/bms_jobs.htm
HellBoy - The deadline? Or how long it took? Two completely separate things! :P These characters would generally take a couple to a few days to model, another to unwrap, and about 3 days per 512 texture sheet...
Por@szek - you again?! Thanks for the continued support across the forums.. much appreciated.
KeepItEvil - Thanks man - hope you're having fun at Siggraph.
dhruvsm - Thanks man
taehoon - Thanks alot - I really dug your Dominance War entry. I thought he was one of the most original characters in the whole comp. How's life at Infinity Ward?
Samanthie - Thank you. I specialize in making angry men that people shoot and kill.. so have fun loading them up with lead :)
backstreet-boys - I can't condone your taste in music, but you must have a great eye for art! :P j/k I'm a 3D Studio Max guy.. but I'll stoop to Maya if need be :P
Blaschke - Thanks a ton!

SoulEater - thanks a ton.. I'm glad you appreciate them :)
subtleBlueTones - I'm glad you dig the work. The exact specs aren't anything I can readily post on public forums, as that could be deemed 'releasing trade secrets.' These were made for the PS2, so that may give you an idea of the neighborhood the polycounts, etc were in...
Somhairle - again?! When have I done it before? :P Thanks man
the_podman - hey dude, long time no see :) How're things going for you?
dpizzle - I appreciate it.. maybe someday my modeling will catch up :P
Vertex Groover - Thanks a ton
Thanks to everyone who took the time to check out this thread. This was a challenging- yet highly rewarding game to work on. No aspect of this game would have ever come to fruition if it wasn't for everyone working together as a team, towards a common goal.
No single raindrop can take full credit for the flood. :)

Hey, its good to see Larson again, and in a more high-res model. I totally forgot about the characters from the first game - havent played it in years. Is the Anniversary edition basically all of the first few games remade with better graphics? If so, I might consider getting it...

Szuhwa - Thanks a ton
Boone - Thanks man - Anniversary Edition is actually a revitalized version of the very first Tomb Raider.
