Hello, when poly modelling i always try to stick to 4 sided polygons. However I see that in a lot of quality models, there are areas with triangle polys.. my vague question is, is there a way to know when it should be quad or tri?

There must be a reason for some tri's - just to get finer details in areas?

i realise this question is hard to answer so if there's no replies i understand

A tri polygon avoids the problem that one egde of a quad is non-planar. (leads to visible artifacts). It's difficult to model a complex surface with planar quads. Btw. Maya allows you to triangulate and to quadringulate your model.
