Thanks for your comments guys.

The 'Art dept' is going hard trying to prep for our production which officially starts on Monday. So we are able to commit school hours to the project.

The vacant sign is the toilet lock which is the renamed movie logo. And the wash hands is just for a laugh.

'3D Modeling dept' starts on Monday so we will keep this posted. Animatics should be finished by next week so watch this space.

Day 2 of production and everything is moving great.

The students are modeling fast and efficient and the level has been lifted since their last assessment.

Being in a team has helped everyone understand the industry process and deadlines that keeps productions deliver on time. We have dailies every morning as I "Director" look over their work and give them critiques.

Thanks for your comments evryone we really appreciate it and we always look forward to your comments in the morning.

We are recording sound tomorrow with our animatics so I will update tomorrow.

Hey Guys

Congrats to all of you! I have been seeing your progress and I am glad we are along side of some really talented artists. Awesome Competition!

We are a bit late with our Animatics at the mo. We have really tried to lock down as much as we can in the editing stage so we are able to produce a strong story with our animation.
We have had 2 versions of the Animatics so far and i think we will only post the final version.

Rigging is great and the facial blend shapes are in progress for our main characters. It nice to see some personality on John and Molark. So we should be all finished by 23 Aug in time for Animation start.

Our Camera/Layout Dept are eagerly waiting for the Animatic to finish so they can start the 3d Animatics.

Thats all from me.

Good luck guys

Hey Guys

Sorry about the silence.

We have been busy doing textures. We are officially 2 DAys late in out scedule. I have been really trying to lock down the animatic as most of you know its important to get it right at this stage to save us in production.

We have the team doing animation tests on the Alien and I am happy how the rig is working.

Some concept art here for the Dunny in Space scene.
Animatics ready soon. (I know I said this before, but I really mean it!) I have Matt Harris working on sound design and music because you know that successful film is 50% sound.

Better get back to work.

Hello Brothas

Under a month to go!

The animation stage is going slow but on course we have one week to go on my schedule but it looks like we have to go a week over time.

Rendering and lighting starts this Month and we are trying to get our render farm working or should i say render hydroponics (4 Processors). We have had a few distractions our local TV came in to interview the school so we had to do a Dog and Pony show for the cameras.:)

Anyway we will post some of our finished shots soon when we have some finished renders done.

Thanks to all those who wrote in.

Goodluck Guys lets finish this on time! Am I the only one worried about the amount of submissions that will finish? Is it 10 entries must finish for the competition to go ahead?

Cheers

Cheers mate, it's definitely going to be a time crunch to get everything finished in time. If only it ended in November! You have a pretty nice project going, by the way.

I think there will be 10-15 completed entries. I have a feeling there a few "sleeper" projects that will submit final entries / WIP's in the last few days of the competition. I wouldn't worry about that part too much.

Best,
Dimitri.

Rendering Starts this week. We are 2 week behind schedule but hope to catch up doing some Late nights and weekends, so fingers crossed.

Our render (potplants) are operational now so we should be able to render while finishing the aniation. We officially have Rob concentrating on finishing textures while the rest animate.

We are having problems with the Mental Ray occlusion renders. they don't work. Some internal file problems that we don't have time to figure out. So we are faking it by ambient shadows and lighting.

Its going to be a tight one to finish on time but we are positive we can pull together and ship it out!

Good luck to you all! Go hard!

Hey Guys

Well, 2 days to go and we are finishing the last of the shots. Rendering has been going slowly but surely and also the Comping results have been looking good. Sound is underway and our soundtrack is still far from completion since we need the final edit to be finished.

We will complete the short film for our school assesment 15th Nov but regretably it will miss the Strange Behavior deadline. Even with our planning and resourses we could not finish a 4min film at the professional level we strived for in 3 months.

We will try to send our unrendered (playBlast) 3d animatic to showcase the quality level of our animation, cinematography and editing.

I want to thank CG channel and sponsors for the experience and wish our fellow competitors all the luck.

Hi guys,

Really great work so far Jake, as I say several times one of my favorite works on this challenge!

Btw it’s really a bad thing that you can’t finish it for deadline, but its better that you won’t reduce quality anyway, it’s really good and valuable thing, congrates guys for it! I just was in a same situation also I preferred my project not finished in time than finished with a low quality!

Btw I hope yet they give a time extend and you can finish it for this challenge also, :)

Anyway I really like to see your work finished and hope you post last work here too, it goes professionally so far, and in a style I always liked!

Your team workflow was great also, “inspired” !

Maybe Dekartdek... I don't blame them they did extend it 2 weeks already.

In any case I hope they had enough contestants enter for the comp to be legit, it did say in the rules there needed to be ten entries. It maybe a case of asking the three or so on time entries whether they would consider allowing enough finished or close to finish projects to enter, even though they were late.

Maybe we have qualified because we did enter all milestones and the 'Making Of' its just we haven't heard otherwise.

Do note that even though you haven't uploaded the main animation itself, you've still technically "completed" the challenge (and are in the pool of entries to be judged) by entering your making-of.

I really like this project but it seems to me that it is a team project. As I can remember, the animation entry suppose to be an individual entry, am I right ?

The rule 9 says: "Team members may make individual entries in the Animation and Illustration categories. A team member may enter an individual category using work they have developed for their team entry, however they must have the written consent of their team leader to do this."

This entry is only Jacob's entry ? It seems that the videos show all the team work, not the individual work.
Sorry for this, I was just wondering myself if it was "normal"...

As nominated team leader, I believe Jake is submitting the entry on behalf of the team that put hte animation together. I didn't see anywhere in the rules that said the animation had to be an individual entry only, or did I miss that bit?

lol.. hehe... weird thing I see in this Strange Behavior village! it was my question as well as in why the Short Film entries populating the Animation catagory. I mean as far as I saw, most of them didnt finish. And, for that I guess the short film catagory is invalid now (cause as the rule sates, 10 entries much submit the finals so a catagory could be evaluated) So why is Lord Mibus transferring all those entries here?...

I think its better to ask these questions in the FAQ thread in the short film section. I'll go do that.

Mibus
12-03-2007, 12:44 AM
Some of the 'Short Films' weren't based on the screenplay, which was a requirement for being in the category - they're actually supposed to be in the Animation category.

I'd not taken into account the 'group entry' aspect - you're right, it still doesn't qualify, since Animations must be an individual entry.

We'll discuss it internally, but I imagine it's going to have to end up disqualified after all (since it doesn't follow the script, it can't be a Short Film; since it isn't an individual entry it can't compete in the Animation category).

I'm sorry if I got anyone's hopes up :(

Mibus
12-03-2007, 01:00 AM
Hi,

I've just finished talking with Mark; both of us agree that we'd love to have included this animation - even just as the making of - but that it would be really unfair to include it, given the rules involved.

If any team members have completed individual entries in either the Illustration or Animation category (highlighting an aspect that they individually worked on), they will not be disqualified due to this decision.

We have been having ongoing discussions along all of this challenge about how to improve the rules (and the presentation of them) to improve things next time around, and rest assured that we're doing what we can to make Challenges a positive experience all around.

Best of luck to you all, and I hope we see you back early next year for the next Challenge.

My 2 cents to this.

I thought this did qualify in the short film, the instuctions (not in the rules)

"Your short film must be based on Paul Gulinos screenplay “Art Gallery”.

You may alter the screenplay – choosing your own images and changing the dialogue to suit. "

the second line relevant, and the fact there is a "screen play adaption" prize.

the animatic starts in the art gallery with coments inspired from the original screenplay.

From the instructions again
"You are free to create you film in any style you want – Cartoon, storyboard, 3D, live action with practical effects or full blown live action + 3D and special effects."

as a fellow entrant I would be amenable to their Animatic judged as their finlal entry as storyboards are clearly allowed.

jakeDaMus
12-03-2007, 02:04 AM
Hi,

Have been following all the posts and had not realised there was any issue with our script adaption until the last few posts. And we're a little bit surprised that this has been an issue at all.

We were under the impression that we were allowed to adapt the screenplay and base it artistically on, as per your rules:

"Short film entries must be based on the following screenplay. Adaptions are acceptable and the screenplay has been written with this in mind."

It is clearly stated the screenplay has been written for us to adapt however we feel. It doesn't say we have to follow the script precisely either - so we're a little confused...

We know we have adapted the script differently than others, however while still maintaining the main aspects/themes from the script.

Would you please clarify how these rules have disqualified us when they would appear to support our entry?

We would still love to be considered in this competition even with only our Animatic and Making of... we still would love to show you all how the finished piece came out! It's just sitting here waiting to be put up on your site... :-)

We eagerly await more information.

Jake

So many of the screen adaptations you see in Hollywood get blasted by the fans because they deviate too much from the book. Isn't that what's happening here? If the script was unacceptable it would have been obvious from the earlier milestones that were submitted and it would have been better to say something then rather than after the fact when it's too late to do anything about it.

While it doesn't follow the script word for word, isn't that something you've been encouraging by saying the script has been written with adapation in mind? Does this mean the other Short Film entries that deviate from the script are also disqualified?

Is the Short Film category is invalid anyway with only 4 entries meeting the deadline, or have enough people actually entered for it to continue through to judging? Either way it seems silly to make this decision over such a minor issue after all the hard work that was put into it.

I can appreciate that this has been a tough call to make, but it does seem like a bit of a contradiction.

Mibus
12-03-2007, 02:57 AM
If this is based on the screenplay, then it can be moved back and continue in the judging.

It looks very much like it only belongs in the Animation category; it's rather hard to say without the finished animation, adapted script, etc. etc.

Jake etc: I'll move it back over to the Short Film category, and will send you some private FTP details so we can take a look at your final FLV and make sure it really belongs there. Is that OK?

Hang in there Mibus and Mark :)

Wow well I think just the 'making of' is ALL class and I'm sure the final piece is fantastic! You should all be very proud of your work.

I had a small 'uhoh' when I saw the difference from the screenplay .. but that really is for the judges to decide :) I admire the crazy angle taken.

We all knew a 'final' milestone was required or we wouldn't qualify. I think we all thought this piece sadly wasn't finished - but if the judges are happy :) There was obviously a lot of work put into this piece, finished or unfinished.

But I think most indivuduals were probably a little 'eek' to see it in the Animation section. The rules are clear - Jacob noted 'The team is of 16 Animation students' and the first post in the FAQ says 'Animation is for individual entrants' and further on 'Team entries are only allowed in the Short Film category'. Individuals could have submitted their own work in the Animation section, I just don't think anyone did.

However I think it's a little unfair to zero in on this entry only - Antipode's entry here is also a team entry of 6 that didn't finish, and it doesn't follow the screenplay at all.

I think it's up to the judges to decide on the validity of these entries, finished or unfinished, and this really looks like an amazing piece, all the best guys, but I think pitting individuals against teams would really turn this comp on it's ear :(

I think the adaptation is a valid interpretation of the original.

At one point Mark Snoswell posted the requirements

We are going to be quite flexible on this.

What must remain is:

1. Two central characters that have just met for a first date in a gallery. One of the characters is good (a reasonable person who appreciates art and different points of view). The other person is bad (is a bit of a sleaze -- has no appreciation of art or other people’s opinions and is only interested in themselves and sex.)

2. Pictures that come to life and are sneaky, reacting to the bad persons comments.

3. The last picture has two or more characters in it -- one of whom replaces the bad person in the real world.

The setting could be anywhere... on earth or on an alien planet.

You can choose whatever pictures you want – or make up your own.

You can alter the ending to add a further twist.

To me what has the most weight in all of these is the declared flexibility. I think we were all reassured that as long as we were loosely related to the original, our entries were valid.

part 1 - the script has john and amy in a galllery on a first date. that she is a no-show, reduces her to mise-en-scene, rather than a central character. I think this is legitmate as an adaptation. Structurally it shifts the piece from romatic comedy to tragic farce, but I don;t think that's wrong. Its an artistic choice. Sure it creates a thematic shift, but it still has the same opening of john in an art gallery on a first date. Amy remaining offstage allows her to keep her role as the reason for John's being in the gallery, while eliminating the conflict between them. Eliminating the John and Amy conflict makes room for the conflict between John and the paintings, which brings us to requirement two.

Requirement two is about the conflict between John and the paintings. Theis entry focuses on that conflict and turns it into prop driven farce. Nothing wrong with that. Since teh script has two possible sources of conflict (john vs Amy and John vs Paintings) that can be combined or emphasized as any adapter wishes. Choosing the farce is a valid emphasizing of one of these dual conflict sources.

Part three is hard. John ends up in the painting. That to me, meets the core essence of the end of the story. Does the alien replace John in the real world? This is animation and if there is one thing we should agree on, its that the reality of our animated world is mutable. So the alien doesn't enter Johns world, John ends up in teh aliens world, which happens in such a way that we see that the two worlds are arguably the same and that the alien is in control. The paintings win, the bad guy is punished for being a cad. To me that is the same essential ending as the original script.

I also would like to point out another thing about these rules. Mark Snoswell further clarifed the looseness of these rules in response to Mim's comment.

I adapted my story currently and developed it to be suite for project conditions, but it has not dragons on paintings for examplpe! or tow characters on last painting that replaced with John! here is now hard restrictions about story!
Now it is really a strange Behaviour!! :(

Btw jus my opinion, tnx, mim,

I'm not sure what you mean --- I only gave examples of how I might adapt the screenplay personally. You have a lot more scope than my suggestions.

I interpret this to be a further freeing of the adaptations to go where their creator's whimsy takes them.

Since flexibility and added scope are given as the plans to go by, I have to say this script is a fair adaptation. It has John and Amy on a date in an art gallery as a mise en scene, it uses conflict between John and a character from a painting as its core conflict, and John ends up in a painting. Turning a high brow piece about the nature truth and beauty into a potty joke, doesn;t disqualify it as an adaptation, it just sheds insight on the adapters sense of humor.

peace out,

B

I've taken a look at the entry (thanks Jake), and yes it's definately a Short Film screenplay adaptation. I'm moving it back right now :)
