No, it's a joke, it's really nice to see that two similar ideas take different styles.

Hey, i see you're going for a very 2Dish style for your kid , that'd be great to see in 3D!!

Oh the whale's face! is amazing! I would take a whale with a mug like that everywhere to pick up chicks:scream:!

Good!!!

Wow I like what you got done already!!! But...
I have to say you're in trouble pal, I have tried some sculpting of 2D characters (In clay, but problems are similar) And I can tell you there's always some point where you can't quite get the model right, Yep I like the sketch too, but that 'Z' kind of mouth is the hardest to translate to 3D, take Fred Flintstone and Dexter for example, still there are some great sculpts of characters like that, In fact I googled some Fred figures and the best have the mouth modified the same way you did with yours (similar shape of the upper lip and with a sharp edge) if any, I'll suggest that you make the cut where the nose and ears attach to the head more evident, that and the hair (Go crazy!), i think, will help you to get the 2D look a bit more.

Keep going, I really like your pic!!:applause:

Hi idyeaah!
I hope that you can see it in colors soon, but first i need more hard working on models :scream:

SteevieWoo!
Thanks for you comments, they are well come! I agree in everything what you say.
That's a first model made without the sketch reference, now i would make another sample with the sketch in front to make it more similar.
About the mouth in "Z" form, i think that is difficult to make in 3D but we must think in the final representation, the model will be placed only in a one position, one view, then... I think that I can reshape the face in order that it will be like in the sketch.

Hola Daniel, cool idea and very nice sketches and models !! I´m agree with SteveWoo and agree with your solution, you need only a fixed model on pose an expression. I liked a lot the expression in your 2D sketch. Buena suerte!! and follow your progress in the concept and model :)

Good luck.

Yes, at the beginning the child was a man ( this if it's something strange  ) , if you see the first sketch you can see a bald man but, after several reasons, i decided to change it for a child... maybe was a wrong decision, i don't know

This is really coming along! Nice character design, thank their expressions are both great! Compositionally, there might be a little room to move the boy over a bit to the left. It would show us that flipper a bit more, but most importantly, it might be nice to avoid the two main vertical elements in the piece - the rope and the collar - from sticking up right out of the center of the boy's head. Anyhow, just a thought.

Are you going to texture now, or spend soem time modeling the environment? Good luck!

Yeaah! Way to go Daniel:bounce:.. I like how these 3d characters turn out! Can I say Im more crazy on the guy's pose on the first untextured model you made? (the proud boy I mean).. Also I think that the whale's tounge would look nicer if you make it wider and more flatter same as what you did on the pencil art..Cant deny its looking really cool man!.

Hi, Daniel - I noticed that you rotated your main character around a bit. I think he looks fine either way, but one of the things about his old position that woked particularly well - and even better in the previous post! - was that we could see a lot more of the curve of the inner-tube, so that it looked a lot more like... well, an inner-tube! The more we see it edge on, the less it looks like what it is and the more it starts looking like a hot water bottle. Whichever way you orient the boy, I hope you'll consider rotating the tube around to that we can more clearly see its defining torus shape.

Oh, and nice to see the ground and some starting colors!

As I came very late on that challenge, I didn't see yet all the thread and I just discoverd this one... So cute ! I really like the attitude of the little boy. For my part, I do prefer the little boy than the adult, even if it's not as strange for a boy to want to play with a whale... The ombrella on the top of the whale is the most funny part, I think...
I would like to help you with my comments, but alas, I don't know anything about 3D...
The result seems on a good path, however ;-)

I like it all, I think it will turn out very well.

My image is 2d only not 3d, so you could comment if you like.

Thanks,

Hi Daniel! I love your concept and the characters. Expressions are very well done. Superb funny. Just one thing I would like to offer if you don't mind and if you have time for testing some bump and specular options, you may decrease the bump a little bit more for the general of the orca as varma said too for the backfin and by the way if you try to increase the specular a bit, orca would be seem more moist. Otherwise everything goes excellent. Have fun and good luck! Cheers!

Hi, Daniel, just popping in to agree with the other folks about the bump-mapping. IMHO, not just on the whale but all over it feels somewhat extreme. I think dropping all of your bump map numbers could help a lot. Good luck!

Hilarious! the style really compliments your concept here... the sky could be a bit more saturated I think tho... I love the characters face, such a simple expression with such simple shapes but sooo effective in conveying his attitude. Congrats

Well, I have to say you catched the cartoony look of the kid and the dumb expression of the whale in the final picture and that's very remarkable!!

Congratulations for a really fun piece with a great finish, and the crab was just the chocochip topping of this sweet treat!!!

If I can add anything to this coment would be that you could add a little shine on the lifesaver in photoshop, but that's just a wee thing...

heya, cool concept man

I know it's final, but there's still time to do some tweaking, I feel the whole piece is very dry looking, especially things like the whales tongue and maybe adding wet looking drops and water streaks down his back would really add alot to the piece.

The blow-up ring float maybe could use some blurred refraction and a higher specular value.

goodluck!
