Hello,
I have seen alot of different ways to build a tire. Although unfortunatly they were on different softwares such as max...Well, to get a better idea of what they were doing I tried it on max, and then tried it in maya. No success. Certain points I had to stop using max because I just simply couldnt navigate or find what I needed. Since I am more used to maya, I must resort back. I am currently working on a realistic car, starting with the rims. I have the rims completed and I need to work on the tire. Ive seen the displacment technique but I dont like the way that it appears. I would like to actually model it. The tire is the image below. And would like to recreate it. Please help me figure out how to tackle this.
Thanks!

I would just make one repeating section of the tire tread, duplicate it 20-40 times to make one long tread strip, then use a deformer to wrap that strip into a cylinder (or manually rotate each duplicate strip around a cylinder, but time intensive). Afterwards you can build a normal map off of.
