hello.
im plannning on making a female head in maya

im just curious, what is the best way to do this?

one method i have used is the birail tool. another is via creating a profile of the side of the face and extruding planes out, until you have a head.
also using a sphere to create the head, and simply shaping the vertices.

please tell me your way of making a head??????

Comming from a classical analog media background, the best way for me is to sculpt a head in Zbrush3 and then retopologize that into a working mesh which can be exported for tweaking and rendering.

Ah, but you meant in Maya? I do it by drawing a spline cage in frontal view, make that into a polycage and then draw each vertex to fit the sideways profile in sideview until you have a basic face shape. Then I go into perspective view and refine the topology by cutting faces and adding edgeloops.

The way I've learned is by starting off with a cube and smoothing it twice to round it out before moving sections to conform to the proportions of the head like the jaw (side, front, top). Then, I would split/move edges to generally where the facial features would be (atleast two edges to show the top and bottom of the feature). After that, it would just be the standard extrusions and moving of vertices to define the features.

I haven't experimented yet so I can't say that this is the "best way", but it does seem to work well.
