View Full Version : Japanese Landscape
Suirebit 07-21-2007, 07:17 PM Edit: you can also find the final here http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=523907
I had some 3 hours free and nothing to do so I ended up playing a bit with this :) I didn't had an idea when I started this, just let myself carried...
Of course, it still has a lot of artefacts and problems remaining, edges to correct...anyway, besides those what do you guys suggest add/cut/correct? Maybe I find another 1-2 hours and finish this quickie
Oh ya I can't find a title...help :D it reminds me of a japanese landscape...
Thanks in advance!

Looks nice so far.
My eye is drawn to the black crack area (artifact) in the rock under the waterfall, which I'm sure you're aware of.
Name? Here's a couple off the top of the head: "Hall of Dragon Mist"
Or "Hall of the Ancients"
Looking forward to seeing the finish.

hmm nice names, thanks! I'm thinking of adding a stone castle, vertical, integrated with the mountain....something like helm's keep...hmmm..let's see when I find time

well done, it looks great , perhaps the foreground element on the right should be darker so it matches better the exposure you have on the very close element rocks and wall.

this can become a nice mattepaint.
here are my thoughts:
- make the bottom road more complex and towards the castle -like a serpent.
- take out the right cliff and add there some trees or whatever has more details and it is more subtle. - right now it looks framed. (left-right rocks and top-bottom road and tree)
- for a nice and peacefull atmosphere, the top tree is a way to heavy element for its position. maybe make it more lighter or shorter. - u can choose an element to close the left-top corner without been so distractive.
ps: is that yosemite mountin?

Thanks Sorin, very good suggestions :)
Framing it was my original intention, but I guess it's too obvious...I'll work on what you suggested, apart from the cliff - I can't/don't wanna take out that one...maybe move it to the right a little.
PS: yup, at least part of it :D

How about some chinese embellishment to the wall, you have to look closely at the castle before you realise it is oriental.

The people who live in the castle would be permantly soaked from the waterfall, must get through a lot of brolleys and wash day must be fun........

Btw I think this is the perfect castle for any King :D I mean, no large armies can attack it, siege is out of discussion and he has a nice 3 miles view over everything...
Food must be pretty expensive tho up there :D

looks much better. the eye travels now more easely in the composition. u can also put on the left cliff some engraved elements (runes or chinese characters) to give more detail for the front plane. It also can look more mistic.
nice.

Rich> that's actually good...just think how hard would've been for them to get water otherwise :P The castle is strategically located :D
Sorin> thanks, glad it's better :)

this is coming along really cool, I love the castle and wall elements,it makes the image more interesting and complex, I would have started for a 16:9 aspect though ( it gives more cinematic look )but this looks great congratulations !

Ever seen the houses of Meteora? :)
I get the feeling something's still a bit off with the light... I think it's probably because the lighting is kind of split between the original spread out light and the shaft effect you're creating... One should have dominance over the other.
Other than that, it's looking good. The wall really improved the dynamic of the pic.

Real hot piece it is already. I got a suggestion to solve the waterfall tho. Compliments man, it inspires me to create a matte just like this right away, but i guess i wont.
You should create a river at the bottom of the waterfall, wich catches the eye ones it passes the back of the castle to the for ground and have it zig-zag down underneath the castle's wallroad till its not able to be seen anymore to the right.
Edit: Just a 1minute sketch to explain further, becouse i really think this should do it.

The last suggestion is quite good, show contrast depth and dynamics,

At the base of the image there are 2 problems. One is were the road meets the concrete edge, were there is no blending, and the other one on the other side of the road were the shadow it's pure black and look like an odd hole. In rest...cool!

first of all very nice work. is there any way you could show the different elements you used to achieve your matte painting?
thanks :)

Nice work on integrating the castle, that worked out nicely. I think that there are still some quick adjustments that would really help this along a bit if you have a spare minute or two:
- The right FG rock / cliff needs darkening down a fair bit still. It will be in complete shadow judging from your light source, and a similar darkness to the shadow area of the left FG cliff face.
- The tree at the top could maybe benefit from a slight bit of brightening and desaturating? Just a thought tho, you'll have to experiment with that and see if it helps it or not.
- The 'great wall' could be a bit darker, and maybe have a bit more variation in surface texture. At the moment it looks very smooth.
Lovely work though, look forward to seeing your next piece.

Looks really nice! I'm sorry for being a critique on my very first posts.. But , I just wanted to point out , that in a few areas in the background, you have ver sharp edges, and many levels of dark.. which makes it looks a bit like toys , it doesn't look like "toys", but if you would exaggerate the dark more, it probably would, and if you would to take away the dark, the very darkest areas around the towers and stuff, it would look more background'ish .
Really cool stuff though.. Keep it up!
