Title: Poison Ivy
Name: Diane Özdamar
Country: France
Software: Photoshop

Hi people !

Finally, I've finished my entry for the Poison Ivy Challenge runned by Pamzylove on deviantart.

I've spent a lot of time on it, I don't like this colour scheme so it has been very challenging. I must have redone the face and hands at least 500 times....
I hope you'll like it :)

Feel free to comment and crit! (I don't think that I'll edit it though, I'm tired of painting her...except for minor edits)

No reference used, except for the poison ivy leaves, I've at looked at some photos of them using google image to see how they looked like.
I'm trying to learn to paint without references, I think that it's a good exercise. I'm not totally satisfied but it may be a matter of time and practise :)

The anatomy must be totally off but I've really tried... I'll do better next time!

The color scheme is quite striking, as is the entire piece.
I was curious about your comment regarding reworking the face repeatedly and not using reference. You are wonderful at creating a vision that is both believable and yet fantastic. It would seem that finding source material, particularly the face and hands, with similar lighting and position to what you had in mind, may help in getting to where you'd like to take a project with much less struggle.

Thank you very much Artist-Lounge And PaulAbrams!

@PaulAbrams : I'm actually trying to avoid using refs... I've always used them in the past and I would love to be able to paint without refs because I have the feeling that I'll never be able to paint without them if I don't stop now ^^ Thanks a lot!

Brilliant colors ..
It's great that you don't rely on references .. :wise:

It's also hard :D But I would really love to be able to paint without refs... I'm studying anatomy in order to improve, I still have a lot of work to do to be good at it though ^^
Thank you!

This should have gotten a CG Choice Award!

*blushes* I don't think so... I'm not really satisfied with it, there are tons of issues (I couldn't choose if I wanted to go for a realistic or not realistic piece, so there are some style issues : leaves, body, etc..., some anatomy issues, and the colourscheme could have been better) Thank you very very much though, your kind words made my day! *hugs*

The painting is really beautiful...I especially like the glitter on her arms and the way you depicted the eyes. The leaves casting shadows on her skin is a nice touch. She's much lovelier than Uma Thurman in the horrible Batman movie, (although Uma was *uber* cool in Kill Bill).

Out of the 40 hours you spent painting the image I bet half of the time went into rendering the hair, yikes! At any rate, this is a beautiful painting, as usual your attention to details is what separates mediocrity from excellence (in our field). Wonderful work.

Bonjour Diane. The red and green Colours go great together! ( in this work you make them work nicely). Great image. But what really blows me away is the lighting, its Fantastic. the area of her left arm and scarf is awsome. Nice job! ( like all your works )

Thank you very much! It's the first time I paint using only red and green (I've already used orange and green or red and yellow/light green) and I've found it very challenging, I'm glad you like it! :)

Dianae you need to give yourself way more credit thats trully amazing how you can pull off such detail with the color range. lighting, shadows all top notch. well worth 2d choice award.

btw there is nothing wrong with her anatomy overall. small tweaks here and there are quickly over looked with taking in the whole image..

5 stars keep it up.

I absolutely love her eyes...and for hating the color scheme you've pulled off a really nice mix; it so easily could have gone "bad christmas party costume". The only thing that bugs me at all is her lower lip - it seems to stick out just a tad too far to the right, and needs a trace of color on the left so it looks like she's just biting it as opposed to sucking the whole edge of her lip into her mouth !

Much better than I can do, that's for sure :)

You're being too critical of your own work, I love it and think it's one of your best.

Some really furry eyebrows though :) I thought they were lashes until I looked closer.

Still, you get 5 stars from me, one of the most unique and cool looks of the Poison Ivy character ever. Great job!

I think this is an amazing piece of work. You spent a lot of time on it, and it shows. Your being too hard on yourself. Many people would love to be able to pull this off.

I agree with all the comments about your truly awesome piece, colors, detail - great.

My first glance at the overall piece was some confusion about the posing of her right arm. I first thought she may be leaning against something not seen - If she was sitting and proping her elbow on the seatback... no big thing, just my first impression.

Not to sound critical, and I'm definitely not one to compete with your fantastic abilities, my mantra is that the composition has to work, then comes the detail and rendering.

Thank you very much people! :)

Nate : I totally understand what you mean ;) I wanted to create some kind or a dynamic crop, but it didn't really work. Thank you! :)

harachte : she has very long and heavy hair! And I can't help painting "horns" everywhere... shame on me ^^
