drag into your document a picture, select all your canvas with ctrl+a, press ctrl+c and then switch to channels palette. create a new channel and then press ctrl+v to paste your image into the channel. now you can load the channel as a selection to mask a layer.

at channel panel...when I click on " load channel as selec."this message appears:

it's a very detailed black&white map, but this message says something about 50%...don't know what...

like it's stated on the popup box, your selection edges will not be visible (you will not see the 'marching ants':). However, you still have created a selection, fill it up with some color and you will see it will only be applied according to your map.

you mean I can't put a gradient b&w map as mask?

Did you actually even tried that?

If so you would know that this is possible. Applying a gradient directly into a mask would be faster.

No need for using a channel. All you need to do is Alt+click on the mask in your layers palette, which will then open in your document window. You can then paste the picture without Photoshop adding a new layer.

ok, for selecting the channel thing, you can just hit, shift to select the inverse of the grayscale channel. Then hit shift and click on the mask tool to make that into a mask.

As for the specularity, just do any blending mode from Lighten down to Mard Mix.

Lighten through Linear dodge is an aditive blend. Try those first.
