Hi guys,
I am very new to 3d and have recently purchased version 8 of Cinema 4D. I have also got the book 'Maxon Cinema 4d7' by Arndt von Koenigsmarck from my local library.
I am following the tutorials in there and I have come up with a problem regarding the disconnect command in the structure/edit surfaces menu.
It says in the book that when I select s0ome polygons then apply the disconnect command, that I should then get an extra object containing the disconnected polygons. The trouble is I don't get them and I wonder if this is because there are changes from version 7 to version 8. I hope someone can help. btw I am attempting the tutorial modelling a piston and the problem page is page 76 in the book.
Sorry if this is a basic and maybe simple question but I am really stuck with this one.

Ah yes, no Disconnect splits the polygons, but not the objects, the command you want is "Split" from the same menu a little further down. That will do the job for you :)

Yah, I just did that tutorial and had exactly the same problem. I think {looks around for correction from the elders} that you have to select the polys, Disconnect, and then Split. That worked for me, and I only figured it out by trial and error.

Watch out for another typo coming up where he says extrude inner by 20 when it's supposed to be -20. What's funny about that one is that he mentions the negative sign in the next sentence, but the number is incorrect in two places...

But otherwise I think the book is excellent and I have learned heaps...

Hey a big thanks for the help Mdme, Hell I really didn't expect a reply so soon and the first one solved my problem, really great.
Looks like I really did pick the right software and forum :-)

Thanks again

Ah, whoops. I was coincidentally just at Arndt's site and saw this:

A comment on chapter 2, page 60:
At the bottom of the page the translator of the book mixed up the Disconnect-command with the Split-command. You have to use the Split-command to move the selected piston polygons to a new object.

So disregard my last comments.

Thankyou Iggy, I guess I really should have gone to that site to check out any corrections first. Anyways it is sorted now thanks to this forum.

This is exactly the same problem I was having, especially since I was trying to pull the free characters offered by CGWorld apart and animate them, they were all a solid polygon so I couldn't animate or even paint them, this solves all my problems. Thanks. And yeah it is EDIT SURFACE/DISCONNECT/SPLIT. :buttrock:
