Take a look at these tuts. Also think about how your scene would look in the real world and how you can make the lighting have emotion.

Maya now includes Mental Ray, which has a great Global Illumination toolset. You can download Mental ray for may from the alias site if you own maya 4.5.

yamazake,
Maybe Mental ray will be like the maya renderer. Many complain how it sucks when they start off, but then they find after awhile that the renderer is just really picky aand it takes time to figure out all the tricks to render faster and better.

Possibly this is the case again with mental ray we'll have to see how far it gets tweeked in the upcoming months. I've spent a considerable amount of time on it recently and I'm begining to see that time coming down and quality is going up.

Who knows....but I'm feeling optimistic at this point.

Sure,
I can only post test pics though. Due to the "secretive nature" of the client....:)

Hi!
Here are some MR-related tutorials:

http://www.motiondesign.biz/
http://alienbit.com/default.htm

Hope these help!

And have you tried GIJoe from www.pixho.com? Its a Gi fake, (bunch of lights in a sphere), but with very useful controls. I like it very much!

Why do people (starting with the author apparently) keep comparing GIJoe to Global Illumination? It doesn't do anything to fake it or resemble it.

GIJoe is a potentially useful alternative to Image Based Lighting, but all it even tries to simulate is IBL (light from a multi-colored environment), not GI (light bouncing between objects, color bleeding between objects, bright objects illuminating dimmer objects, etc.)

If you want to fake GI, add your own bounce lights to a scene. If you want to fake IBL, use GIJoe or add your own group of different colored sky lights.

Hi Jeremy!
Thank you for your correction, of course you are absolutely right. I still have much to learn!
