i was wondering if anyone had any ideas how i can make a blobby sphere simulating itself split in half. ie. cell division.

Well when i tried this i used two blobs. One that was a whole surface and the other was made of two parts (using detach surfaces on a NURBs sphere)

then at the point i wanted it to split i just keyed the visibility 'off' for the whole blob, and keyed the visibility 'on' for the two parts.
THen of course, as they split, you have to close up the two halfs so they retain their blob shape.... i just stuck clusters on an animated them closing.

I was doing a Lava Lamp... so its pretty much the same. But i'm sure theres a better way of doing this... but whatever works is ok i guess.

i can send you the scene i was doing if you want to check it out... i was pretty new to Maya when i did it.

I've done this a couple ways in the past. One way is with 2 nurbs spheres with a third constrained to both so it stays in the middle. Use this third sphere to intersect the other two and trim the intersection. Then make a fillet blend between the openings. Requires some tweaking, but looks ok. For large amounts of cells, I keyframed curve cvs with clusters, then made the curve a softbody with a goal of one and the particles as blobbies. Gives excellent control and you can key the goal off if you want to use dynamics.
