Well I'm starting in late here, and my concept needs a fair amount of work but this is an idea that's been brewing with me for a while. May only complete a small portion of it, but a great way to get the motivation to make it happen. Here's a quick exploratory sketch of a craft in the piece - built by toxic fungus.. of course...

Hey nice concept, be good to some scale ref next to the craft so we can get an idea of size. Good luck champ. Keep it rockin in hamiltron

Hey nice to see a fellow kiwi! Good point Jhonus, I'll work scale into the next piece, obviously a small thing built with spider web and matchsticks, that sort of thing.

Thanks for the motivation Mim, you're right, have to make it happen, plenty of time. Need a timeline, where's that calendar.. I thought mushrooms building a flying machine was pretty strange haha. I'll put a storyline up shortly. Like the look of yours by the way. Good luck!

Great thing! It is like some Leonardo Da Vinchi invention, or some Hieronimus Bosch vision! Now when you added more volume and focus on ship with lightning, it is much clearer to observe! And i like very much the Mushroom people!

Keep the good work!

Trickz
09-14-2007, 08:36 AM
Thanks Nenad :) Yes, being set in the dark, light and texture is going to be very important here. wow that you picked Da Vinci and Bosch. Da Vinci has been a huge influence on my work, my favourite artist. And I have been inspired by Bosch also. Hopefully I can bring some of the richness of his work to this piece... without the demons...

Nennad
09-14-2007, 10:13 PM
Yea those two are great artists! I readed DaVinci lessons for painters, which are very painful to understand fully. Though he, as I think, did not influenced me in style like you perhaps, he gave me great insight with those lessons into mathematical and logical observation of the nature, and translating it into visual arts. His lessons about how things in nature reflects one another, shades, perspective, muscule logic... recomended also for digital artists!

I am wondering how will you animate the ship. It looks so delicate and with many tiny details, transparent also, which all looks that It shuld move at even mildest wind. Good animation in those small details could add to the realism of this fantasy greatly! Maybe some organic movement for a red bulb ?

Trickz
09-15-2007, 03:31 AM
Yes Da Vinci was a total genius huh? I love his inventions, flying machine, tank etc. That's what inspired this ship.

You're right, I imagine it being very flimsy, dangerous. Ropes swinging, pulling, things twisting and the main balloons billowing and rocking - thinking about light throbbing down the veins, being organic like you say. Also steam from the pipes. Also want the sheet across the top to billow. A lot to consider! Dynamics, dynamics... I'm doing tests on the ropes now, so that the balloons do move but stop when the ropes go tight. Hmmm, headache!

Really liking your work btw, great modeling and colour.

Thanks Alvin, Npantic, loving your guys work! Yes time is my enemy, I doubt I will finish by deadline but will give it a shot. The ship came up better than I'd hoped, and the more dynamics I add the more life it has. I love when you run it back and go wow! I love Maya. Character blendshapes are done, I'd hoped to have a crew but due to time it's going to be a solo effort haha. Big ship for one mushroom! Back in a day or two with a test render.

Well here's my main character - or Fungie ;) The builder and flyer of the ship (hopefully, given time). The concept is a mushroom that's grown in nuclear waste and mutated. Plenty of things I'd like to fix but I'm just going with it now.

Hey Trickz, I see we are all dealing with same problem: little time for our great visions :). And other obligations too! Not to mention that what we are doing now is something most complex - creating everything on your own, something that normally few people would do! Thats why everything cannot be done as we want. But i hope that result will be satisfying.

Mushroom men looks good enough for the time given... proceed quickly to the next step! Good luck!

Well I've been pretty disapointed in myself - I've been pushing the time limit so hard I haven't had a chance to post updates. I haven't even seen my animation yet apart from wire frame play blasts - basically I'm rendering one frame for the visual, then letting it run! I won't see the full piece until practically deadline! But this is for fun, haha. It's screwed me up on time, I'll have to re-do. But made me laugh. Get in there!

I'm looking at an all-nighter to even get close ;)

Just have to say has been just great watching you guys work. This is my first attempt at an animation of any size, has been HELL, but watching the quality you all are putting out has been amazing. Been a pleasure.

Hi Trickz...! Watched your movie, and very much liked the feeling of the underworld! - feeling of space is really great. Also, nice compositing , camera, and developing of the story... pitty that it is low res preview. Ship have many of great details.

I am more fond to the movement of the mushroom man in the part where he puts the crystal in furance. He moves like older grunt man. But... in his walk cycle when he walks towards the ship, he walks like young man, and his stature is like young "rap" man... also you have some issue with unexpected move with ankle... In fact... he carries the crystal firstly as it is light, and then he puts it down like a great weight... I liked more heavy weight animation! Just my opinion...!

Keep the fantastic work and... I wonder I noticed much people are from New Zeeland... is that flourish of 3d product of Peter Jackson Industry there? New Zeeland seems like end of the world to me. :)

Cheers, great work!

Hey thanks for your comments guys, much appreciated.

Wow Anna had a look at your portfolio, great work. You have exactly the feel I am trying to portray, working 'large' on a small scale. Lovely work, thanks for the comment.

You're so right Nenad, the walk cycle is all screwed up for the character and the weight. I'm still learning the art haha. With the rush I built a very rough rig (BAD idea) which ended up being hard to pose. Dunno if I should go and rebuild...I'm tired!

Yes New Zealand is a creative place, small, we have maybe 4-5 million people, and Lord of the Rings basically turned the whole country into a Hollywood set. Everyone knows someone that played an Orc or rode a horse in the battles. It really kicked off the effects industry and Jackson has been great in building on that.

Thanks again Gilles, I'm embarrassed of the mistakes compared to pieces like yours, but new to this, have learned a LOT.

This is a breakdown of some of the scenes. ...hmm should I rebuild that character or not eek...

Well this is 'almost' the finished entry - you'll notice a glitch or two which I'll iron out shortly - just want to make sure I won't have problems uploading ;)

This has been quite a journey. I haven't had any experience putting something together of this length and complexity. I did a huge amount of research which I don't have time to upload in any format. Sadly the final is still pretty rough around the edges but time is up. I've learned a lot and it's been great rubbing shoulders with the talented artists in this competition. Thankyou to you all :) Now I just want to take a break for a while ;)

The storyline

It could be the not too distant future. Man has wrecked the environment with nuclear war and toxic waste, and the land is barren and dead. Nothing seems to live, maybe even mankind has perished. But in this radioactive environment, new life is born. And it wants to explore...

And the final - with a few manic behind the scenes clips on the end.

Wow I can't believe this is actually finished. This has been quite a journey. I haven't had any experience putting something together of this length and complexity. I did a large amount of research, sourcing and shooting video and photography.

I knew time would be a factor and I decided to choose between a short quality animation or a story with a bit of detail. The instructions helped, saying the story and emotive impact was primary. So the storyline became the focus, and a lot of work! So apologies for the rough animation, I just didn't have the time to fine tune.

I've learned a lot and it's been great rubbing shoulders with the talented artists in this competition. Thanks to you all for your inspiration :) Now I just want to take a break for a while ;) Ok well maybe until the next challenge... Thanks again everyone.

The storyline

It could be the not too distant future. Man has wrecked the environment with nuclear war and toxic waste, and the land is barren and dead. Nothing seems to live, maybe even mankind has perished. But in this radioactive environment, new life is born. And it wants to explore...

Thanks for your comments guys, means a lot. Just been great to hang with you talented peeps for a while.

Pepper - love your work too, I think we have similar tastes :)

Hiun - Thanks heaps, I did have much higher hopes for this. I had a pet I couldnt use and the ship was meant to have a crew. Maybe one day. I am considering developing the whole world further and seeing where it goes. Their whole adventure is already mapped out in my mind. Can you imagine how huge and dangerous radioactive spiders would be? haha

Versiden - well what can I say, you set a high standard... *&$#@.. haha congrats mate, awesome work, I'll see you around.

Maxter - I was worried we were going to end up with the same name haha, we both had similar ideas huh? Your entry is great, awesome character and gear.

Been fun, but I haven't slept much lately. Time for a nap. Good luck all.

Great job Trickz!
Your story is delivered very well, I love the idea of fungus people evolving after we have all gone. Strange detail with the smiliy on the Victory... ;)
I know how you feel about having the whole movie in your head already and being a bit frustrated about only having one set of hands and so little time :)
To say the least my entry is suffering from those problems, but, maybe one day...
And none the less what a great experience to push on for a while during a challenge like this, except the total lack of sleep ;)
Good luck to you!

haha yes the smiley. I was thinking, if I was a creature collecting human junk in a sewer, what would be my most treasured find. A smiley badge! And of course I'd stick it on the front of my ship like a figurehead.

You are right, this was hard work. But it is great to say I achieved something like this, and learned so much. I love your piece - but I'll let you know on yours ;)

i like this one. the part where he locks up his ship after putting the glowing rock in it is just excellent. the music really gives this film an epic feel, like that little guy is about to embark on something great. a sequel perhaps?
is there a higher resolution vid somewhere?

Wow Trickz, you managed to do it! Overal feeling is great! I loved especially the physics of the ship, how it moves and "lives". The turtle is really cute! And about scale of work... so rich! One complaint: the making of is too fast  . One must watch it in slow motion :) . Bravo!

Hey Rick, thanks for your comments. I think it is a good detail to keep in later projects, strange was meant in the most positive way :)
Great achievement indeed, one can only be proud to take such a huge step in realizing an idea. A distant dream becomes an immediate world ready to explore for a decade.. haha, it takes time to develop these things!

Really appreciate your comments and crits guys thankyou :)

Tibor - thank you, yours still makes me laugh haha nice work

r1-381 (casey) - thanks Casey, well my animating is a little rough but I really had to hammer it out at the end. I'm thinking of finishing this to the standard I had in mind, and at a higher resolution, but a break for a bit ;) I want to try out Vue after seeing the amazing results Infoarq achieved! And yes I think there will be a sequel. I have a few models I never used and there is a second part to the story.

Npantic - Yes we made it huh! It wasnt looking good there for a while! Thanks for your support friend. The dynamics were a nightmare and took most of my time. My main regret is not being able to show how the ship functioned. Pulling the throttle actually started the thing up, the gears kick in which drive the props, the steam blows and the whole thing shakes. Turning the steering wheel drives the rudders. It was a thrill to see it running, I'm self taught so it was quite a learning experience. Haha yes the making of is fast I know, each section was one nights work compressed into 20 seconds. I just wasnt sure people would be all that interested ;)

Coolconrad - Haha I love your piece Peter, who isn't a Star Wars fan here huh? ...even after the last three movies... ;) Thanks for your comments, you must have a great shot, congrats and good luck

Dubbilan - yes you're right, hey Lord of the Rings was years in the development huh? haha, it's great to have a base to build on.

Thanks again guys, its great to mix with people with your talent.

Hi guys, I put together a little piece for my blog, collected some of my workings. The video is a biggish file so fingers crossed. If you'd like to take a look... (http://www.rickdavidson.com/2007/11/27/wrapping-up-flight/)

Hmm I wonder what the next challenge will be... And I swore off doing another one for a while. What short memories we have ;) I hope youve all had a well earned break.

Hmm sorry Casey, all fixed, thanks for the heads up! Thanks for the comments :) Actually most of the work on the reel is personal. Did my first TVC a few months back which was great but I still cringe, plenty of learning to do yet haha

Hmm my main problem is building a good rig to work with... do people really build their own everytime haha. I've been using the Setup Machine but it doesnt seem perfect. Could be my bad setup tho. Suggestions welcome ;)
