On that note... do any of you guys ever use IK targets for fingers?

Oh yeah, and has anyone figured out the whole upvector thing? Such a simple word with a complex concept.

(Ugh, I hate posting threads without a render!)

Hi,
usualy you will animate finger with FK not IK. IK is fine for arms and legs, but not for fingers or similar.

from the wrist down never use IK, simply to many controls would be needed and would really slow down performance ad animatin, as srek said use FK and/or posemixer.

I asked a question a week or so ago about getting the lumpy bit of skin between the thumb and the first finger to move correctly. The outcome was that posemixer would be best although I'm still a bit worried about using the bones and moving the points, but I haven't finished the model so I can't tell you the outcome.

bone influenced morphs should be no problem if your using expresso.

there's only one real solution for it imo -> posemixer.

I'm animating two humanoid characters, and there is no easier way to animate the hands than posemixer (once you understand how to set up the bones and bones-morphtargets so they work properly)

i use one bone to controll the position/rotation of the entire hand and posemixer to controll the each finger individually. i've three main poses for each finger (spread out, relaxed and collapsed (right english?)) and a couple of aditional poses like fist, pointing, some rude hand-poses :scream: holding something, etc.
all together i have 14 controlls for each hand (three fingers, one thumb). it's not the fastest when it comes to screen-refreshment, but it gives you alot of opportunities to play the hands.

on that note (and no, i don't mean to start a new discussion about that) the mocca-handbook isn't the best when it comes explaining how to get the full advantage of that great tool. but fortunatly there is always the internet!

A couple of questions:
Do you have to do both hands individualy or is there a way to mirror the effect? (is there a cheat button;)
Did you move the fingers with bones or did you rotate/move the points?

thanks

no cheat-button unfortunatly.

i have set up both hands indivudually. each finger contains three bones that have vertex-maps asigned. the thumb starts with a null-bone and has three bones as well.

it's based on the mime-hands-setup with some changes to it to have more flexibility in the hand and fingers. i added two bones that give me the possibility to controll all the fingers at the same time without having to move alot of bones around. (like when you're making fun of someone, who's talking... 'blablabla'... don't know how to describe it otherwise)

i morph the bones, as morphing different poses of the hand will give you not the desired results.

hope it helps... :)

Thanks for the reply CosmicBear.
The hands that I'm going to move are more real-life than the mime hands so I'll have to move the points as well as the bones. I'm sure I'll get in a mucking fuddle but the only way to learn is by doing.
