well, another newbie to wings thread. First things first - hi everyone that opens or replies. I have some a question..

What's the best way to start with? I'm familiar with 3D and 3D software but Wings looks very unfamiliar. Where do I find "So you've never used this before" type information that I can dl / print off or just read?

Just show me the money!

ok, you have the app opened and right in front of you...

sooooo.... right click, choose a primitive, left click on a face/edge/point of primitive, then right click and choose action.... go, go ,go...

If you look in the tutorials thread you'll find loads of good stuff. There's a link to a tutorial I translated from Lightwave for Wings which tells you everything you need to get started. It's the fourth post of the tutorials thread I believe.

Beware though! you're on a slippery slope, Wings is addictive!

thanks guys - the main thing is getting into the tools and such. Didn't have any clues from looking at the interface itself. Will start the tutorials thread but it just seemed to jump to modelling tutes.

I'm fine with all modelling and stuff - it was just that "where's the tools and buttons" moment I need help with. Shortcuts has a thread all on its own and I'll get there too.

As a thought, is it possible to re-order the tutorials thread from one way to another? So an experienced user doesn't need to look at "how to get around the interface" tutorialss and a novice to the programme doesn't need to get embroiled in "how to model a 100,000 polygon" whatever- before they even know where the buttons are?

so you want to find out what all the stuff in the interface does

create a sphere
try each and every tool you are intrested on it
if you get stuck look at the bottom of the screen
thats the info bar, it tells you what buttons do what
also in the help menu it tells you how to do some things

just play with the tools
cause in wings you can play
which is why its so cool and fun to learn

if your to lazy to learn, then your to lazy for 3d
its hard work

cheers

Don't pay any attention to Wasa... he's, well, he's just a bit over zealous is all... down Wasa, down boy....good Wasa

So anyhoo, as we were suggesting, right click and choose primitive... left click on the pyamids for vertice/edge/face/object selection then left clift on model part to select, then right click and choose action... remember to hit spacebar to deselect... and middle button click to rotate, scroll to zoom... the rest is trial and error and lot's of practice... :D

good luck and keep us posted on how you are doing...

checkout topics about hotkeys and assignments most everything can be setup on a hotkey wich eliminates the need for alot of tool buttons or menu searching. there is a wings pdf file floating around on the main wings forum somewhere also.

don't know if I'm supposed to post "thank-you's " but the last two posts have re-assured me to come back to this forum. Maybe not all new users are treated that way.

To Blackthorn3d and S3D - I have new faith in this group. Thanks and I look forward to posting.

Another good place to ask stuff is in the wings3d IRC channel :)
go to irc.freenode.net and /join #wings3d.
Most of the people are pretty nice, and will help as long as they're able to :)

Other than that, the advice of just messing around is a sound one, imho.
There really is no interface, and no buttons other than the ones to change the view state...
so just selecting different stuff and rightclicking will give you access to the tools you need.

Another thing to note are the camera modes, there are several to choose from,
and they change the workflow a lot,at least when it comes to navigating the scene,
so I'd play around with them a bit as well, and see which one you prefer.
Just remember to eyeball the help line to see how to navigate in the different camera modes.
Hope this helps some, and good luck with yer wingin' :bounce:

<< just seemed to jump to modelling tutes >>

Whether my stuff will be of any use, I dunno - but you could have a look, as it's less associated with 'how to make such and such' and more so with tool use etc. (wheel tut aside)

Whilst 'messing around' and eyeballing the info displays are definite 'musts' - imo - there's still a good deal of 'sneakiness' to be uncovered as regards how stuff can actually be use to ones advantage :)

ok my last post didnt get posted server or something

I would never ask or recommend anything I didnt already do myself

some programs you have to read thru a big manual just to do something simple

with wings you can literally play to learn
thats probrobly the coolest thing about it
its simple

and other than finding somewhat hidden options
"they are clearly displayed in the info bar"
there is nothing your gonna learn in a tute that you couldnt learn on your own

also its practise and study of what your modeling that will take you far

ok I think I have said enough

cheers
