Hi. I'm using Maya 8 and have basically been learning it all on my own or through tutorials. I have almost completed a low-poly model of a gargoyle (I plan on posting it later) but am having some trouble smoothing out some areas in the face and chest. From what I have read in the tutorials it seems like the only way to smooth this out is by using the sculpt geometry tool, soft modification tool or the mesh > smooth tool. The sculpt geometry and soft mod have helped a bit but are still feel weird for me and occasionally move a different way than I want. The mesh > smooth just makes it way too smooth and adds more polys than I want. My question is are there any other methods or tools I could use in Maya for smoothing? Should I use zbrush or mudbox instead (I haven't used either before so that would be another program I would have to teach myself)? Thanks.
Dustin

Bevel! Use it sparingly, though. Make sure you have good edge loops, or it'll make a mess of your topology.
Softening normals, too. Its been a while since I used maya, so I have no idea if the tool has changes names or location.
Another maya user would be able to help you more, but there's no need to go learn something like Zbrush - all the tools you need are in maya.
