View Full Version : Sniper rifle light in maya?
Royal 03-25-2003, 05:02 PM does anybody have a good solution for making a sniper rifle laser sight light thingie in maya? A light that produces a visible red tube but still hit objects and make a dot on them.
Appreciate any kind of solutions to this.
(except making a glowing tube and animate it when it hits something :P)

You could try to add volume fog with high density... with a small shadow map (4x4) or so you should be enough.
Skorepka!
I definitely think you should make a glowing tube :) It´s by far the easiest solution, but there´s no need to animate it .. Just make it the length you need, parent it to the laser emitter. For the little red dot appearing wherever it points - I found one solution, don´t know if it´s the best. Parent a projection of a circular ramp to the laser emitter, then connect the projection-node to Incandescense on all materials you wish to receive the laser dot.
Remember to pull down Default color on the Ramp to zero. Click off Wrap U and V.
I attached a little image proving it works!
There is only a slight problem: the projection will appear on all surfaces in the way... :shame:
Try it!

there's a tut with max on laser light
try working with that in maya the max version uses fog and noise
and me thinks that maya would have the same as well

Parent a red spot light with a angle smaller than 1 degre and shadow-casting.
It' shoud not cross every geometry.
You may also want to use foglight if needed.
Good luck!
