There's an anime TV show that I like called Skyland with the floating rocks and graphics and all and it hit me.

Does anyone knows the best way to model rocks like these - http://www.fpsmagazine.com/uploaded_...4-722295.jpeg? (http://www.fpsmagazine.com/uploaded_images/skyland4-722295.jpeg?)

I've done using the Editable Mesh on a box in 3D Studio Max 9 and it didnt turn out so good.

Any help will be appreciated along with recommended plugins/scripts also.

Thanks in advanced.

Unfortunately, as far as I know, there is no simple way to do something like that. Personally, I'd start with a box, extruding and beveling etc until I got the desired basic shape. Then I would export it as an OBJ and use z-brush to sculpt in the details.

Alternatively, you could not use z-brush, and model in the details of the rock using basic poly editing techniques and a turbo/meshsmooth.

Good luck with it.

i'm pretty sure the large environment objects in Skyland are all camera projections, the actual models would be very low poly with all the fine detail painted & projected onto the mesh..

here's a thread with some examples from Skyland:
