I am trying to get depth of filed to work with the camera settings...i know that sadie has a tutorial, but i cant follow that either...is there a way to explain depth of field as you would a 3rd grader? i have seen some really great effects with it and would like to experiment a little bit.

You have to do a couple of things. First, you have to enable depth settings in the Camera's Depth tab. Once you do that you'll see near/far planes represented in the camera object. You can drag these using the orange handles to establish the near/far focus fields.

Second, you have to enable dof in the Render-->Effects settings.

Then you just have to play with the blur strength/distance settings. If your subject is centered in the frame, using the autofocus setting will make things easier.

That's the basics, but there are a bunch of other settings that are explained in the manual.
