Hi guys

Just made a desktop, took only 2 days to do it
I made it to try Afterburn and Brazil together and it was kinda cool in the end, but damn Afterburn is so sloooooow :o/

Let's say those tentacles are coming from the screen...
From the computer, yeah

Let's say you're sitting there...
Where you're sitting now

And, i think...
You are an artist

You know how it feels...
You wanna do something, got the inspiration but you feel lazy and say: "alright i'll do it later"

Well those tentacles are there just to tell me: "move that ass, come here and show me what you can do"

A boost, yeah, that's the answer....
What are those things?
They are a boost, to me :o)

But you know, don't ask what things are, just give them your own meaning :o)

Hey that's pretty nice, but I'd like to know from you: I'm not a 3dsmaxer myself, but Afterburn and Brazil are somewhat highend tools as far as I know... hmmm, how to put this... well, to be honest with you I really don't see what exactly they achieved here. I mean, what in your picture could not have been done with a simple scanline render and perhaps some layering in post?

Especially if, as you stated, Afterburn is slow... why use it when not needed then? You probably could have saved yourself a lot of time, no...?

Anyway, I'm not trying to sound harsh here, I'm just genuinely interested in hearing your reasons!

Well, I tried using post production technique in Photoshop to achieve the same effect but truly I couldn't get it that good
As you can see all the wired goes in DEPTH into the smoke
The more the distance, the more they blend into the smoke 'till they totally disappear
The little effect I used here in Afterburn wasn't that slow, I just complained 'cause i wanted to, ehehehe, overall the whole render took like 45 minutes on a secondary PC I use just for renders, it's not a powerful machine but i'm happy with it
At least I could render this and work on other stuff, so who cares about render speed if you got no production time limits to respect or a customer to satisfy

Brazil is needed 'cause using scanline rendering i couldn't achieve the same lightning i got here THAT easy as using Brazil
Both scanline with many lights and Brazil with one light DO slow Afterburn, so let's use Brazil 'cause it will be easier to control

Now, the idea was to upgrade the whole scene, by adding metal devices on the wires, they were supposed to reflect the smoke all around, that's the main point of the Brazil+Afterburn combo, but the SubWay bedroom took all my time I stopped working on this, for now...

And right now my job took all my time from the SubWay too, damn it... but i'll be back and who knows, I'll may render this scene again with the metal extensions I want and model the bedroom too ;o)

PS: Don't worry, you don't sound harsh at all, I believe CGtalk is a really friendly forum and few people are so dumb to actually be harsh to others
I get your interest, just know the scene was meant to grow, and probably will 'cause of your interest ;o)

EDIT: I was forgetting one point, sorry, as i told above another point of this easy render was to TEST those plugins together ('cause i got in mind a short movie project where both those plugins will be used alot)
I had big problems in past with Afterburn and external render engines like RayMax, RayGun etc etc
Just wanted to test it with Brazil this time :o)

Thanks for addressing my points jampoz, it's always cool to learn new software simply by doing stuff

Anyway, concerning the clouds/fog you did with Afterburn: Next time I'd recommend you have the renderer output an additional Z-Depth map... using that to do fog in Photoshop is really simple: Just invert it and use it as a mask for a layer of clouds and you should be set!

Well then, good luck in continuing this scene, I'd like to see the progress your making!

Yep but they are not, I wanted a relaxing background, expecially 'cause i got a dual head and i'm forced to have the same background on both the screen
Been months that i have this background on and I assure it does hit the target
It's quite relaxing :o)

But I'll work more on it, you think more complex clouds will look good?
