First things first - This has nothing to do with war, pro or con. I just like fantasy armor stuff. Cool?

From a concept Sketch (http://www.hawkprey.com/tankee.htm) by Hawkprey (James Hawkins). It's with his kind permission, I am posting it here.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quoted from permission correspondence: "Hey that is amazing! I want to link that on my site if it is OK. Of course
you can use my stuff. I would consider it an honor to be associated with
such a kickass modeller. Really nice man.

Glad I could offer a little inspiration. - Jay"
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aliens "pulse rifle" from Darren Proctor's Movie Mesh Site (http://members.ozemail.com.au/~dproc/) .

Modeled and rendered in 3D Studio MAX 5.1 using Skyraider3d's E-Light Maxscript (http://home.wanadoo.nl/r.j.o/skyraider/e-light.htm) for fake GI. Compositing and post processing accomplished in Photoshop.

Now THAT made my morning.

Totally awsome model, dude.

Can you answer a few questions for us?

1. How long did it take you to model?
2. What's the poly count?
3. Can you post a wireframe?
4. The model looks like polys...Can you breifly speak on your technique?

Thanks, and again, amazing stuff.

This is rock solid! Awesome attention to detail! I can only hope that one day I can do something half as good! My only crits would be that I agree with Thirdeye...the tires should dig into the ground a little. Also that small rifle mounted on top looks out of place. It seems such a small and ineffectual weapon compared to the other armaments on the vehicle. Maybe a larger machine cannon would do better? Just a minor thing really. This is still one heavy hitter of a job you have done!! My hat is off to you. :xtreme:

nice model dude.
looks like how ut2k3's bulldog would / should of looked hi-poly.
the texture definitely rocks and gives it that dusty / slightly rusty look i assume you were going for, and ( / but?) i can see where you grouped repeating objects in the uv mapping cause of repeating colors and curves. i'm actually working on a somewhat similar vehicle for a ut2k3 mod and i'd really like to see how you created the texture (or the texture map with / without the uv map ) for this vehicle, if it's not a problem. :D

03-25-2003, 04:27 PM
Amazing model, my only comment is regarding the texturing. The lens of the flood light should be more like glass, if you don't want it to be clear, just make it a more glass like colour, not the same colour as the body of the vehicle.

Other than that I

Per request, some scene details:

Construction: It's all poly work. - 388,920 of 'em. Loads of beveled shapes and extended primatives. Some FFD and lathe work naturally. A tiny bit of SubDiv stuff, but mostly simple stuff done with simple tools.

Textures: Almost embarassing... Pretty much low specular, default-ish greys with a subtle procedural marble trying miserably to look like camo.

Modeling Time: About 25 hours.

Render Stuff: The E-light script generated 341 lights with colors based on a image map. The total shadow mapping was 350 MB, resulting in a render time of about 10 min at 1280x1024 res.

System spec: Dell 530 Workstation, Dual 1.8 Ghz Xeons, 1.5 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce...

Hehe very cool

one thing tho...

the gun on the top...
1) somehow reminds me of the "Alien" one... did u take inspiration from it?
2) its colours differ too much form the rest (or maybe is the rest that's too plain?)
3) it doesn't look like a gun made for a truck, it looks more a hand-rifle...

did u model it on purpose for this truck? or u made it before and then added it to the model?

anyway... :applause: great job!

chrisWhite

Not exactly rocket-science :)
Apologies to Dangeruss if I shouldn't be doing this, I couldn't resist.

I do so like that model, too, it's extremly nice. I agree with others that the alien-gun seems somehow out of place though. I'm most fond of the dirty gray-ish used look you've archived, it's very nice-looking.

Corn Dog
03-25-2003, 09:55 PM
Sweet... Only original crit I have is the black personel gun ontop of the tank. It looks odd, maybe it could be a little beaffier to give better reason for it being fixed to the tank. As is a person could hold that gun and would want to be able to freely move around with it not be fixed like a turret.

That said I didnt look at the drawing you may hace been following it in detail.

Still looks cool over all.

Nothing wrong with similiar style, besides it is someone's concept drawing.

It's like, Feng Zhu is Ford, and this is Chevy's answer!

03-25-2003, 10:23 PM
That's excellent! In terms of style all those concepts build up from the British designed Ferret and Fox series of armoured cars by the looks of them anyway, and no harm in taking those out into alien land for a spin. So any 'coincidence' could point back the original designers, there are lots of sites featuring both on the net and anyone can find one. But I don't see that matters anyway, it's a great model!

hanzo
03-25-2003, 10:33 PM
no offense but Feng and others, concepts look cool and powerful, but I most say british armor is lack in art and good style war machines, and although it maybe a little similar to brit tank, it's somewhat of a deserves to compare these excellent concepts to brit war machines... :shame:

but thats just my opinion

Witchy
03-25-2003, 11:00 PM
Well sorry but if you had driven around in them and knew what they looked like in real life you would recognise a chassis and wheel design when you saw it.

People have taken it on from the basic design, and that is the art in it. And while you might think British war machines 'lack style' I think you will find they were not designed for the purpose of pleasing your aesthetic sensibilities.

If you start from a base model like a fox or a ferret the resulting concepts are all going to look a bit alike but so what- they are great concepts and this is a great model.

Witchy.. killing is an important thing, you are actually ending a life, every time someone dies weather good or bad, they deserve there last respects, at least to be killed with a pretty weapon (war machine with style), for an example the in WW2 the germans and the biggest strongest tanks, and what they also had was style, and for another example the medieval European sword was heavy and lacked a good edge also many were flat ugly, compare it to the samurai's sword the very making of the blade was an art, and they were all designed to have a great edge (beautiful and most effective), again another the Ak machine gun series, it was marked as a genius weapon and it looks good, compare it to the M-16 witch looks like a misquotes and jams, etc...

It is a fact in this worlds history that the best weapons looked good as well (with exceptions)

again I mean to offend no one but this is my opinion :shame: heck and you know I have a good point  any artist/engineer knows artistic weapons design is generally better.

how many polygons is that model? just curious.. has a lot of detail and didnt' know if you did any displacement maps or anything like that to enhance the detail.

other than that.. very nice model but I do agree with the floating bit on the ground...

In all fairness I thought about Feng's concept drawing right away as well when I saw this render, I actually thought it was based on it until I read the post and saw the Hawk's concept and compared it to Feng's. I don't think he was implying anything, neither am I, we are just saying they are pretty similar, that's all.

kickass eh.. truck.. well all the stuff you've done looks sweet, but the rifle on the roof (alien something.. movie mesh something something) looks very wrong i think, really disturbing to the picture. but still the best eh car? ive ever seen...

Martin. T:

If you look at modern day tanks, APCs, fighting vehicles, artillerary, and support craft, you WILL see pintal-mounted light to heavy machine guns mounted in battery along with the coaxial and main canons.

M60s, M240Gs, M249SAWs, M2s, grenade lanuchers, etc, etc, etc.

Why it looks out of place, I don't know. I think it adds an air of authenticity to the model, and I for one, love it.

yes sure there are gus on tanks and war machines, but the quality of the model is far better than the gun, and thats what makes it out of place..

It's a PULSE RIFLE from aliens on the vechical, lol. cool. Pulse rifle isn't exactly a mounted weapon, else I like it.
