The brushes you use is going to depend on what you're trying to achieve. You may even end up defining your own brushes or downloading someone else's settings. I'm guessing that you're using Photoshop?
I've been having pretty good success with the default hard/round brush. I'll use this one for most of my work and only switch if I decide that I want a different texture.
What I can suggest is to use a large brush with a low transperancy setting to block in your areas of color. Then work to smaller brushes with slightly higher transperancy to add more details. Keep doing this until you get to a small brush at 100% for refining.
Oh, and never work off of a white background. Use a neutral base color with a very low saturation.

Hi Raul,
What brushes? Whatever makes you feel comfortable and fits with the style you want. That all depends on your personal preference... just experiment with them and you'll know.
Cheers, Jeroen
The best tut ever:
1. Practice
2. Take a good look at your work
3. Practice
4. Some more practice here
5. Done :)
