I am modelling a sub d character and have converted it to a polygon model for texturing. The problem is I uv unwrapped it using several cylindrical unwraps and when I went to edit the uv's it took 30 seconds to move one uv, ok so I thought I would delete the history. Great instant moving of uv's again, I did some work and saved it. The file is now 13mb and not 19mb which is good but my problem is it won't load anymore, maya sits there for ages and then stops responding.

Please help I am running out of hair to pull out...

put your scene file online and hand over the link. I would like to take a look at it

Hi

I think I have found the problem, basically my poly model still had some history from the sub'd object ie level three detail because when I converted my poly model back to a sub'd I still had all my refinements despite deleting the history. I deleted "all history" and that seems to have sorted it.

Thanks for the offer Maya Ayanami :)

Ok that wasn't it....now what did I do, I hate it when I do this. There must be a way to "properly" delete the history. I must have lost it when I was experimenting withe converting it to and from poly mode. Oh well back to the drawing board.

Yes, I am aware that I am having a conversation with myself :)

I'm loosing it........

Now I really have sorted it. The problem has come from me converting my sub'd to poly when in proxy mode. This was intentional so that I could map objects seperatly then attctch them and then convert back to sub'd. It's just backfired a bit. Guess I will have to redo my sub'd level tweaks...ggrrrr

you know you are really confusing, right.
hey why dont you just convert a poly thing to subD's and keep the poly as a(what the hell do you call it.)
but doing that makes it easier to both see a final looking model and to edit mesh.
I am confused.

Yeah I know, I basically made a mistake and was trying to do a work around and yes I have even got myself confused. Sorry about that and thanks for your interest:)

I dont know.
My favorite way to model in SubD's is to conver a poly cube into a subd and keep it as a proxy object(I think that is what it is called).
but that way you can use both the polygon and Sub division modleing tools. thes can be quite helpfull in certain situations.
but I don't know how I can get it back into a low res polygon, you know the polywire you edit. and it is kinda weird but if you select your object and asign a new shader onto it it will shade the poly proxy object and not the subD's and if you use that one window to see the conections between nodes and you just select the sub divisions and then aply a new shader the subDs will be shaded but it disconnects from the proxy object(I think). so there are either some glitches in my maya in the whole maya or in my brain.

try this out and see if the same things happen to you.
I am interested.

I spent loads of time converting a sub'd mesh to a poly and back again. You can convert a sub'd to lo res polygon by making sure that you tick vertices option and change the level to 0, this will give you a low poly model I did this when the sub'd was in proxy mode, that way when you convert it back you can still keep the external control lattice of your original sub'd surface.

I will try the mapping thing later. It is pretty evident that sub'd in maya have yet to be refined, when there is more control of uv mapping it should be pretty hot. Just a bit bugging that you have to spend time finding work arounds at the moment.

hey, before i open a news thread....

i've the same problem. my .mb file has 34 MB an is not loading...after 48 hours. im nearly crying because i worked long for that model. i dont know what the problem is. i just created a polygonmodel. first it had 5 MB and when i copied a few things some deformation-objects where copied too. that caused the great size of the file, i think. or is it the history? my friend says that is has something to do with the render-options. but how can i edit the file, when i cant load it?:annoyed: i dont know wether i should abort the loading (that means push the hardware reset button ^^) or just wait....

can anyone help me????
