View Full Version : Viewport on 2nd Monitor?

Does anyone know if it is possible to have one viewport displaying on a second monitor?
At present time I use the 2nd monitor only to place various tool palettes, but I think it would be really cool if I could display the perspective or user viewport there too.

thanks,

hey,

i unfortnatly dont know, but i wonder that too. esp cause my monitors are different sizes, i cant just drag taht over so i wonder what i can do to really utalize that other monitor best. i would like to have possibly a 5th viewport there or somthing. i know this may be foolish, but still, it would be interesting to be able to do that when desired

have fun

If you're running a dual-monitor setup through Windows, then no, not.. not really. Maybe if you run MAX in software-mode? .. Hey, I think that would work actually. Just rescale the MAX window manually to span both monitors, and there you go. I think.

But otherwise no, Windows doesn't allow accelleration on both monitors at the same time, as far as I know. It can do one or the other, which is a step up from previous times where it only allowed accelleration on the primary monitor at least, but still not perfect.

If you can live with the requirement that both monitors has to run the same resolution, using nVidia drivers anyway, you can switch to a different "kind" of multi-monitor setup: one that fools Windows into thinking there's only one big monitor, and the drivers takes care of the rest. I use that at the moment, and MAX plays along just fine with one viewport on each monitor. It's kinda nifty.. though I should say it is my present situation that neccessitates this way of handling dual-monitor, I personally prefer letting Windows handle it (primarily since it allows for different resolutions).

rereading your question you might be asking if you can drag a floating viewport to another monitor. No. MAX doesn't have the ability to "tear off" a viewport. Maya does though, works fairly nicely, but I don't think that neccessairly makes you happy :)

u can do it in windows. there r no floating viewports in max, but u can span max accross both monitors and all viewports will work.

im not too sure of the settings or what card u guys hav, but i hav a gf4 4200. in the nvidia properties, u can tell it to allow opengl in multiple monitors. that should do the trick. although i didnt like it much. i would rather hav my command. material, and render panel on the second monitor.

Just be careful with running openGL in windows with the latest nVidia drivers. If you have a card with Dual out then this solution may be okay. If you have two speerate cards you will need to make sure that in the nView settings its set to 'Single device only'. Otherwise OpenGl applications will crash regulary.

want that in max 6!

Don't worry, if discreet's current trend continues MAX 6 will have it. Why? Because Maya has it, and every feature Maya has, MAX must have as well. Or so it seems ;)

stability train?
honestly, i don't know a more unstable professional application than maya...

How do you get floating viewports in Maya? I don't know Maya but I support some machines that run it and there are some issues with OGL on dual monitors I can't resolve.

Hey, I like my little red rickety wagon :)

Strata 3d has floating windows :P

dvorik in response to your floating viewport in Maya on a second montor thing.
Select the viewport and select Panel, in there there is a tear option, you can then place this anywhere, and thats what Max needs very very badly ;)

The new leaked Nvidia drivers on Guru3D allows both monitors to run at different resolutions and still span. I was pleasantly shocked to see it do it on my system. I always hated having to drop to 1280x1024 on my 21" just to match the max res on my 17". With the 43.30 drivers I can run the 21" at 1600x1200 and the 17" at 1280x1024. And this isn't using the Twinview option the drivers used to have. Both monitors are running on the same driver so it's not splitting the card like with Twinview. Still even with this ability I don't see how you can 'pop' a viewport only over to another monitor. Would be extreamly cool if we could.

Great, fnselmi, thanks.

[edit] And since last august you don't need to use unofficial drivers or hack the registry. In fact official Nview2 was a substantial improvement for max OGL as far as dual-monitor management options are concerned.

yeah it no good doing that I tried the same, was excited at the beginning but its not very productive.
I found the best thing to do is put the Command panel on the second monitor, as well as track view ect. Lets home that in v6 you will be able to have floating viewports. Come on Discreet hope your listening here
