Hi there,
I am using painter ix, and I just noticed there is a new version "X" but it looks like it has about 4 new features, all of which weren't too exciting.
Is it worth the upgrade or should I just stick with IX?
If anyone knows where I might fid a full feature list that would be great
Thanks
Pete

Painter X has been out and available since Feb.-March.

Is it worth it? Only you can decide what your needs are. Is there anything in Painter IX that really bothers you? If not, you don't have to upgrade, it's not required you know! :-)

You can find the info at the Corel Painter web site:

Excuse me as I tag on to this thread and add a question of my own...

I'm considering upgrading to Version X from 8. Mainly because of the brush control interface.

Two things are really important to me: stability (ie minimum 'random' crashes) and the ability to handle reasonably large, multi-layered images.

('reasonably large' might be 10,000 x 5,000 pixel, with a number of layers. So files of 500mb and more are easy to create).

So, how is Painter X on these two criteria?

Thanks,

Mike A.

Very hardly, that resolution and several layers would really slowdown Painter and make it very unstable and crash. Painter X is also much buggier than Painter X.5 so it's a matter of downloading the trial and trying yourself :)

That all depends on your computer and what equipment you're using. Best is to download the Painter X demo from the Corel website and know for certain. :-)

i think, painter was improved a bit from 8 to 9, but yeah large files like that are a bit scarey... There was a way to record your painting and then play it back at a higher resolution in order to upscale your image nicely. It was a bit scarey though and i'm not so sure it would help you out...

Mike,

If you consider brush control interface, Painter X is definitely better than Painter 8. There are also other new features worth upgrading, because you have to check Painter IX.5 new features too as you get Painter IX, Painter IX.5 and Painter X's features. If I'm not mistaken Painter 8 can't flip the whole image horizontally/verically without flipping every layers. Also the brush engine as I have read from numerous posts, have gone back similar to Painter 6 brush engine with additional improvements, which is reportedly better than Painter 7 and 8 brush engines.

In regards to the stability issues with using multiple layers and large sizes, you have to try the trial version. I must also warn you there is a new update for Painter X a few weeks back so SOME X's initial stability issues must have been addressed to a certain extent somewhat which can't be said for the trial version.

Hi Pete,

I've been using Painter quite awhile now(since version 2), and X seems a whole lot more stable than IX.5. I'm not a guy that would upgrade for a few more bells and whistles, and I'm not all that much interested with all the brushes and whatnot. I'm interested in getting the job done in the easiest, most efficient way possible, in my case, Painter X does the job for me. Especially with the patch.

My typical file size is between 30 and 50 Mbytes with multiple layers, and I save a lot, mostly iterative saves.

If I was on the Upgrade path, I would definitely upgrade. If I were buying from scratch, I'd think about it a bit. I use it professionally for designing and want the most stable, fastest version around, Painter X plus it's patch seems to fill the bill for me.

Featurewise Painter X doesn't look too different from IX.5 to me!
to me it looks like IX.6!

but it's stable, and those bugs of the initial release are mostly resolved by the recent patch.

but I still find lot of usability and other issues with painter.

if you are planning to upgrade from X.5 you should think twice and download the trial version first to check if you find it really worth upgrading or not.

if you are upgrading from version 8 or previous ones or buying a brand new one then I feel it's really worth to go for versionX.
