View Full Version : Dro'ok Reaver
h0pesfall 03-25-2003, 04:54 AM Joint effort of me (model) and Skyquake (skin). This model is intended for a Warcraft III total conversion called Toareg. It's 586 polys.

I know the uvmap isn't perfect, but I guess it doesn't really matter since the size of a unit in wc3 is very small. It's already better than most blizzard unwraps anyways :P (oh god they are very lazy). We also used a 512x512 map instead of 256x256. Should still run smoothly in game because our mod will have a lower unit limit than warcraft iii.

I like that...very cool. For the skin, can you add little variations in color. Like add some blues and yellows to add depth and add a little more shadow. Otherwise, very nice work.

Would you like to share this with the Neverwinter Nights Community?
Really cool model. :buttrock:

Nice model I like the concept and the execution:
Crits:
-There is no reason to use a 512x512 map on a model that small. The ideal situation is to achieve a 1:1 texel ratio (the ratio of a pixel on the texture sheet to the size that same pixel is represented on the screen). a 256X256 would be more than adequate.

I agree with you Erik Arorson, 256x256 would be enough imo too. I just use 512x512 map when making the skin, it can easily be scaled down from that without 'loosing quality'.
As for the colors, I followed blindly the wishes of the leader/concept artist heh :wavey:. I might work on the skin a bit more later.
Thanks for the C&C.
PS. BoromirNo1, tough to say, got to talk with the bossman .

Looks pretty great! There are 4 things that I think would improve your texture though.
1) The "smaller", "inside" teeth texture needs to be better. Make some teeth bigger or have different shapes. Certain teeth different functions, like all animals.
2) The large, outside chompers look odd as green. I would make them a standard teeth color.
3) The carapace shell over his neck is cool, but give the texture more depth, especially on its ouside ridge. It wasn't made with any poly's so you need to make an extra effort with the texure.
4) The overall hue of green seems un-natural. Try a different shade of green, and add some yellow, and darker green areas. Anything "natural" should be more random.
Anywho. This is a great model, it just needs some detail tweaking.

thx for the constructive criticism biffen ;)
you are right for everything except the green teeth because they are suppose to be like that (that's what the concept artist told us anyways... i know it does look a bit weird but he's the main man who makes the decisions for the MOD so heh...)

You should just move the green 'teeth' so that they'd align with the jaw imo h0pesfall (ZZzz) ;) It'd look much better, if the color is wrong I'll just adjust it a bit heh.
Thanks for the crit. biffen, I'll look into it at some point and try to improve it  (the dark are of the carapace is going to be team color fyi).

Will try to improve those teeth sky ;)
Here I tried improving the skin a bit, by playing with hue/saturation/brightness/contrast etc. I think its a tiny bit better now. It added a bit redness and yellowness at some places. The smaller version on the bottom is to show what it could look like in wc3 (approximatly same size and camera angle.)

As I have already mentioned this would be useful for Neverwinter Nights. The poly count is perfect and the whole thing would be a nice addition. Please would you release this so that we can enjoy it too.

Like Skyquake said, we can't make those kind of decision. We have to talk to Jericho about it, and I doubt he will want to release any of our stuff before the MOD is complete (or at least in beta stage)

Soz about that. Didn't notice the ps message until know.
No problem on the release.
Btw. There are loads of cool low poly models at Neverwinter Nights Vault. Some of them may be of use to you.

Texture could look more intresting if there were little bit of bump mapping in texture, and it could bring depth to little flat texture

Unreality, Warcraft 3 doesn't support bumb mapping ;).
i've been checking this model out for some time now....and i must say this is really kick ass..
i love the style and your textures help push that style even more..
great job.

Yeah but you can make bump map in texture ex. in photoshop or Gimp, so it brings illusion of bump mapping.

Great stuff anyway, but i agree with Unreal.A bump illusion would be cool. Make the hide look more rugged too.

Updated it a bit, tried to make it bit more rugged looking and stuff  (which one is better btw? The bottom one or the one on top?).

Edit: Thanks for the c&c, I'll try to... look into the bumb mapping thing later on...

The darker is better because it gives more depth to the texture as a whole. The variation between green to green-yellow colors is a great choice :D . Very cool design both on the model and skin btw, you got a good eye for anatomy too, except the throat, put some more shadow on the lower part. Makes it look rounder err, hehe

i think you could even get away with a 128 texture map,
can you post you unwrap file?

I'm not exactly proud of this skin too much heh, should redo the face a bit, or the whole thing later. Anyway, here's the map:
