View Full Version : predator effect
artbearny 03-25-2003, 03:05 AM I read another thread where this was asked but they never explained how the solved the problem. Does any one know how to make a material that mimics the effect of the predator or metal gear solid invisibility suit? I'm relatively a newbie so you'll have to describe the settings that you used. Can anyone help me out?

Howdy !
I'm pretty sure that searching well you'll find a tutorial for that, but still not long ago was a discussion about that Matrix "bullet trail" effect (kind of environment distortion), effect that could also be used to create engine heat stuff, check it out here:

the point is, that may not be the best/exact technique, but it could point in the right direction for such an effect ?
hope that helps

This seemed to work for Error323:
1) Set IOR *very* low. Maybe 0.03 or even 0.01.
2) Set IOR map to Fall-Off and stair step it like a cartoon shader with 4 steps.

Start by making the material RayTraced.
Make it 100% transparent.
Look for Index of Refraction and give it a *very* low number.
Open the Maps and look for Refraction.
Set it to Fall-Off.
Then stair step it like a cartoon shader.
