Title: Ballet-bot
Name: Alex Jefferies
Country: United Kingdom
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay

Some people might remember this guy, I created him (or her) for the Master & Servant challenge a while back & never got round to finishing him.
With the new challenge under way & such a fantastic topic, I instantly wanted to join in... However, I've entered so many challenges & not finished, that I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't even THINK about strange behaviour until I'd finished this guy off, so here it is!
I made some changes to my original composition, the 'Master' character is gone & the robot is now dancing on an oil drum. I changed the design slightly too, making the robot more beaten & dirty. I wanted there to be a stark contrast between the filthy world the robot lives in & the world of a ballerina.
Modelling was done in Max 7 & Max 9, rendered in V-Ray 1.5 & all textures created and/or manipulated in Photoshop. The bases for many of the textures came from www.environment-textures.com - an excellent resource - and some were from many, many photos I've taken over the years.
The final image is about 3500 pixels high, so I'll post some close up crops later on...
As this is the first personal project I've completed in about 5 years, feedback would be most welcome!
:D

Aww it's so cute! Excellent image AJ and it's great to see you finished something :D Makes me feel slightly ashamed of that robogirl project I've been working on for 4 years now... Maybe I should take a leaf out of your book and finish it on the 5 year aniversary ;) Again, excellent image and I hope you'll be submitting it to Expose and the likes! (You'd better...;))

Thanks for all your comments guys, I really appreciate it!

And thank you Per-Anders for my first ever front page plug! :D

To answer a few questions...

Sheff - I'd love to post the whole high-res image, however I don't think my bandwidth could take it plus you never know what unscrupulous people might do with a piece of your artwork at a usable print resolution.

Erilaz - Yes, I will hopefully be able to start work on my challenge entry in the next couple of days. And who knows, maybe actually finish it 3 years later!

urgaffel - Thankyou. It does feel good to have actually finished something of my own for once! In fact, I remember you hounding me to texture/finish my Ghost in the Shell model about 6 years ago  - now, stop reading and finish that robot!

agv - The slipper shader is a vray material (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=12603) with anistropic highlights, a tiled gradient ramp for the bump & nested in VrayBlend material so I could dirty them up with some 'rust dust'.

http://moonjam.users.digital-crocus.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/Images/3D/balletbot/BB_SlipperViewportMaps_r.jpg

SpaceTik - As soon as I saw the topic of Strange Behaviour for the challenge I thought "I wish I'd finished that ballet dancing robot...", plus i noticed that a few people were throwing around ballerina conepts & I wanted to get this done before anyone made a dancing robot! :D

Here's a couple of viewport grabs, nothing too spectacular in them though!

http://moonjam.users.digital-crocus.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/Images/3D/balletbot/BB_EyeViewport.jpg

Again, thank you for all your comments!

Alex, this has got to be the nicest still image I've seen posted here in a long time. Modeling wise it's fairly simple, but the lighting & shading are just 100% quality. Amazing work dude!
