What's this all about - apart from some regulars here I see little activity on these forums so I was wondering just how many matte painters lurk around here silently, ghost watching :)

Anyway, joke apart, if you are one just leave a message here and say a little about you...I (and I'm sure others too) would love to find more 'collegues' and check your portfolios :)

Hello my name is Rich, I am a professional photographer, prolific poster and bad painter. I have hanging around here for a while and I enjoy the community feel of the site. I would also like to hear from the silent community that skulks this forum. I am a slow learner to matte painting but am a complete geek when it comes to visual effects.

I have been to many parts of the world and find it a Beautiful place and I like to share my view of it. Would absolutely love to go to New Zealand so if you are Peter Jackson reading this I can make tea and do a Good photo. LOL

Many regards

Rich.

Look forward to hearing from you.

nice idea Tiberius , I'm sure a lot of proffesional matte painters are always looking around , you have to understand most of the people already working in proffesional stuff are busy most of the time , (so do I hehe) , but we're always trying to post or to help others, in my case I'm the foum leader and I´m always trying to encourage, help or give advices to anyone interested . it's great to have a community on matte painting matters , and everybody will always be welcome to post work ,questions or requests .
I´m sure this forum will grow and alot of people will improve their work just sharing techniques here.
I have great ideas for the upcoming months talking about challenges and other matters .. is good to be pro active and always try to make this forum the best . thanks to CGsociety and all the members.

James> Yes, I know&understand how busy one can get, I worked professional too :) Looking forward for more challenges and, about techniques, how about starting a sub-forum or at least a thread where people can gather their hints/techniques...something like 'Tips&Tricks'? I think that would be great
EDIT: james, is it possible to make sticky this thread?

Anyway, to say something about me too :) My name is Tiberius and I work for King of Houston as Matte Painter & Illustrator, altough I also still do freelance work.

I've recently joined cgsociety (some one odd year ago) and I find it a great community; Looking forward to find more matte artists around here and to see these forums grow :)

You can always find me for talk on Y!M and MSN, id-s are in my profile;

Cheers

Hi, I'm Tim. I check this forum every day but I don't post much. Usually only to submit new work or comment on a piece that is amazing. I guess I'm pretty new at matte work, a year or so, so I'm still learning. I'm in the process of trying to get a job somewhere as a matte artist.

I must say I've learned a TON from posting and reading comments/critiques/techniques on this forum. James and the other regulars have been great at info sharing.

I’m not a matte painter per se but am an illustrator who likes seeing a good matte painting. I’ve been ghosting around this forum for a while admiring the work here, and when the Matte Painting Challenge 07 came up I had to try my hand at it by entering. Obviously I didn’t win nor did I expect to with such admirable competition. The challenge was exciting and a learning experience.
Matte painting is an interesting 2d niche and I’m looking to learn more about it with time and more challenges. —Great forum.

Hi everyone,

My name is Jason and I run my own digital art/flash creative business and freelance as well. I spend literally as much time as possible studying digital art, graphics and design in general. Although I have only just got into Matte painting I am already addicted. I think this has to do with my vivid imagination, love of all things creative and passion for image manipulation and composition.

Even though I am not a professional Matte painter yet. I have worked with the same tools, software and techniques for many years whilst working within the graphics industry and still try and answer as many topics and posts as possible whilst showing respect for the members whos post I am answering.

I have also noticed that there are not many new topics posted here on these forums, and those that are seem to be just about competition entries. This may put some people off who are not interested in these competitions or those that do not have time to enter like me.

Hopefully more people will get chatting now and share there experiences etc. My only snipe about forums in general is at those members who seem to consider themselves gods of this or gods of that. Also members who will happily post just bad things about your work and not the good things? Theres no place for that and as long as the attitude is kept away then this should be a great place to be.

All the best and hopefully I will get to chat to some of you soon,

Jay

I'm a compositor learning the ropes. I'm also an aspiring photographer and digital vector artist.

I love matte paintings and I come to this forum for inspiration and knowledge. It's exciting to watch the mattes progress from concepts to final masterpieces. I love that everyone here is extremely helpful with their comments through the matte stages. I participated in my first matte challenge in the recent NHM contest. Eventhough i didn't finish my stage three I still had fun and learned a lot on cleaning the plate and coming up with a concept.

I look forward to continuing to be inspired by the amazing art on this forum and to learning from all of you.

Hello,

My name is Brandon and I live here in Goodyear, Arizona attending The Art Institute of Phoenix majoring in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics. I am currently taking a matte painting class and have grown extremely interested in the process. My instructor is a man by the name of David Stipes has done some phenominal work on the Star Trek TV series in which he has won two Emmy's. We have learned about the traditional way of matte painting such as painting on glass and rear projection shots but are doing our work on the computer because the old way just isnt done in TV or movies anymore. Ill be posting some of my rookie work on the forums so you weathered veterans can give me a critique. Any help and advice is much appreciated. Thank you all for reading this little tidbit about myself and take care.

Hi,
my name is Javier, I'm from Zaragoza (Spain). I've been working as a freelance for the last 3 years doing mainly 3D visualization and some little projects on character animation too. This year I decided to get more on digital painting and 3D character modeling, moving away from the standard work I've been doing in the past. I've always wanted to learn more about matte painting techniques as I find this is a challenging field for me. After going through Chris Stoski's DVDs (Gnomon series, I highly recommend these ones) I managed to finish some simple scenes. I've been visiting mattepainting.org quite often lately looking for any challenge to improve my skills, there is some much to learn !! So I finally arrived here looking for online challeges on matte painting. I've been in CGTalk for several years now, but not very active - hey, I have 3 children to look after - but somehow I'll try to change that.

Hi My name is Eric, and I'm glad to be a part of this forum (if possible). To be with all these great guys feels totally awesome.

I'm a Lead Texture artist and at the same time modeller on Toie Animation Philippines. At the same time I'm also Learning the Skills as a Matte Painter, Yes Toie is the same guys that gave you DragonBall. Digimon, One Piece and Classics like Galaxy Express 999. At the office most of us are generalist, I can do compositing, basic animation, rigging and act as the Lead at the same time. At the sides I also do some freelance work on 3d modelling and as a texture artist for some "totally 3d appllicable textures" that are compiled in numerous collections.

What I really want to do is Matte Painting. I've worked as a background artist for Japanese animation for a year and a half before becoming a 3d Lead. And I love to incorporate 3d elements in creating realistic images. I also love painting so this somehow is the best of both worlds.

I hope to learn a lot from all of you, and hopefully hone my craft as a matte painter.

One quick question... Is it okay to post WIP images here that are part of an ongoing contest on another site? If not then thats quite ok.

Great forum guys!

yeah I know what you guys mean, once you are working somewhere it is almost impossible to make your own stuff, it happens to me actually, but step by step the community inside CGtalk is growing and we have had some better challenges with prizes and VIP judges, but is not just a matter of the forum itself or me as a moderator, the community has to have a daily participation , and I think it's just a matter of time. just keep sharing all you great work and the new guys are always welcome !

Hello!
First thing I need to say is that I'm breaking the first rule - I don't have a cgportfolio!!
So I might not really belong in this thread...
But I'm hoping to make one soon.:)

I'm from Jerusalem, Israel, though I lived in the US for a few years as well.
I've worked in photoshop for a long time, but only a year ago I found out that you can paint with it too! So I got myself a wacom and, well, painted.
A few months ago I found out what matte painting is, and since then I've been practicing!!
So far I never finished a painting  , but I learned a lot, sketching, matte painting, camera mapping, and I also started teaching myself After Effects.
I hope that I might actually get to finish something that I like now, with comments from the forum!

Thanks for updating the lists, though I would rather class myself as a apprentice rather than a hobbyist. I work for a government production company in a state of the art production studio. Some of my CGI work has made its way into several productions. I am also the specialist on technical photography, and the only one to use HDR imaging. I have had two paid VFX jobs so far. I am also involved with a production company at the moment producing a TV special. All the graphic design work and CGI modelling for that I have the job as art director.

I am also contributing in a small way to Riktors Project Axum providing concept art.

As for Matte painting yep definately class myself as a Apprentice with a long way to go.......

I am responding light heartedly, i am really enjoying the experience and speaking to upcoming stars and when someone does come out of the shadows who has real talent it gives me a big smile.

Once again thnx for updating this list. A lot of things have change since I started my stay here. Although I do not consider myself as a master yet, I'm still grateful tom all the Masters that have helped me in this forum. Most especially JJasso, and Suirebit, Suirebits work convinced me to become an mattepainter (which I will be starting Jan. 2008 ) and james gave me all those wonderful comments that improved my work radically.

All the rest, you know who you are... Riktor, Rockoppermedia and others more, thanks for the comments and I do hope you will still be there in the coming days... I will certainlly need your wisdom in this field.

Sorry for putting this comment here, but I guess this is the best place since I don't want to waste another thread... Thanks and Happy painting everybody!

Ah, just discovered that thread and figured I'd introduce myself, too :D

I am Daniel Alekow from Germany, I am 21 years old and currently studying Digital Film and Animation at the SAE, but matte painting is what I ultimately want to do. I have been teaching myself painting for five years now and picked up matte painting a little over two years ago, and I hope that eventually I will get to the point where I can do it professionally, that is my definite goal!

So far I mainly focused on the 2D aspect, on painting and incorporating stock photography, but I want to experiment with the whole projection thing soon, too.

I registered here at cgsociety just a few days ago, am glad that there's an actual matte painting section here, so I hope I can get some proper critiques here :D

So hello everyone! :)

I am an artist at the core of my heart. With a passion for art i took up a graduation degree from the College for Arts, Chandigarh, specialized in Applied Arts. With a passion for painting from the start, gradually i also developed a great affinity towards sculpting characters in clay, using them as a medium for my expression in campaigns. With no barriers for for any kind of mediums, i have always found myself experimenting with new ones. Initially starting my career with advertising as a Visualizer, i got the opportunity to experiment with ideas and techniques. And then understanding the need to digitalise myself i got into understanding the latest softwares and techniques. With sketching, Visualising, Concept building, dIgital painting, Character designing , graphic design to matte painting, i have always wanted to challenge and explore myself with my abilities. I worked with a small studio as an Art Director for quiet some time and with an experience of 3.5 years in the industry, now i am looking forward to freelance working online. I recently took up a CG WORKSHOP on matte painting, which has lead me to this wonderful art form.

Hello there,

my name is Jack Moik. I'm a digital matte painter from Frankfurt in Germany. I'm watching this forum for years and I learned a lot of stuff here. So first a big thanks to all you guys. I think it's time to give back something to the community, so here i am.

I started painting with classic airbrush and joined the movie business allmost ten years ago. I did a lot of painted sky and landscape backdrops helping miniature landscapes come alive, mostly for German TV and movie productions. A couple of years ago I entered the digital realm and finally found my tool which is the Wacom Intuos. Together with Photoshop CS it really can be a magic weapon.

I recently did a lot of matte stuff for TV, video clips and some motion pictures. At the moment I'm working on some matte paintings for a new German movie about Adolf Hitler.

My matte painting gallery is Mattedepartment. (http://www.mattedepartment.com)

As I also do work as Digital compositer, video editor and film music composer I do have a "master homepage" for my company, which is Solid Ground Entertainment (http://www.solid-ground-entertainment.com)

Please take a look there if you like. Well, you may also contact me on my little myspace account (http://www.myspace.com/jackmoik) where you can also hear some of my music stuff. I need to update all my web entries soon, but many of you know how precious time can be in the media business. ;)

Your comments are welcome, best regards,
Jack

i already kinda introduced myself in the first post, using this one to both fill up the gap of two posts being checked for spam so i could continue my new formed life 'ere, and more importantly to appear human, friendly even :)

I used to be a photographer, terragener etc ... but the thing is i cant afford the equipment, last tg render took well over 5days (and that was a preview), and the camera witch is more or less a simple digital snapshot cam, just doesnt cut it, crops are to small, too much noise, iso200 at its best etc... my matte painting exp. is non-existant, unless you count in fixing the already mentioned photos and renders...

i think everything is at least 1y old but here's the:

http://www.artismurder.com/samartian/gallery

I'm not a patient person :) so this is a big step, cause i figgure i'll need quite some time to start doing this on a higher level... and looking at the some of the discussions from the forum ... i have to mention that i see matte-ing as form of art, i have no finnal goal with it (movies games etc.) just art, no more no less...

the human chars:

beer drinker, chain smoker, friendly... errr... did i mention friendly? *suffers from brain blue screens*

tools of trade: under 300euro (500$) value PC (thats with the 22" samsung) ... aaand cheap genious tablet :) works well when you get used to the glitches...

Hi everyone, thanks for creating this great thread! I hope to cultivate much knowledge here with you all.

Im Kyle Kuhlman. Ive been working on my matte painting portfolio for a few years now, building on skills from traditional painting and architectural visualization experience.

I have yet to work on any films, but I have some experience doing matte paintings for ballets (video-projected backgrounds) and high-end architectural renders.

I hope to expand my 2.5D skills, and in general, become a better matte painter and concept artist.

If there is anyone looking to collaborate or has an interesting project going on, I would love to help out.

Nice meeting you all :)

Hello Everyone,
Im very new to cgsociety. My friend who works in video games directed me here as a resource to get familiar with other people and resources in the areas of digital art that I fancy.

My name is Ryan and Im from Canada. I have a diploma in graphic design and am currently enrolled at the University of the Fraser Valley, working towards my Bachelor of Fine Arts. Im not planning on being an industry matte painter (although I wouldn't turn down an opportunity) Im planning on becoming a Secondary (High) School art teacher.

Anyways, I have absolutely no history or works to back up my matte painting skills. Im a complete newbie, aside from being inspired by the many works I have witnessed in magazines, websites and in film. Im here with beginner knowledge to learn what I can and start doing matte paintings because I absolutely love the medium and look forward to communicating with other artists while I work on my degree.

Thank you everyone, just for being here and I get the sense that you lot are a very supportive but critical bunch, which is essential to any growth. Any pointers for a complete beginner would be entirely welcome.

Just a technical note.
I use photoshop, learning Corel Painter 9 and I have an Intuos 3 4x6 tablet that I am also getting used to.

Thank you everyone
Glad to be here.

Hi everyone,

I know and read this forum since few months now and I would like to thanks all the artists around there for sharing their creations and skills, it seems to be an awesome community.
So I finally decided to write my first post today :p

My name is Quentin and I'm currently doing studies (2nd year of 3) in computer graphics design in belgium.
I began drawing 'seriously' in September 08 and I got my first tablet (Wacom Bamboo A6) only few months ago in January.
I thought that work in 3D was my thing but through the last months my interrest for 2d work was growing so i finally decided to start doing some sketches everyday and to begin digital painting as a perfect newbie.

and I end up there writing this post to get myself introduced in the world of digital painting ;)

I just finished my first painting yesterday, it's uploaded in my portfolio, so feel free to comment and critique.

Thanks for reading and I hope to see you soon through the forum

Hey everyone, this is my first time on the forums, and I am excited for things to come. I am a graphic design student in london ontario. I am familiar with pretty much the entire Adobe CS, but I would have to say that I am most accustomed to illustrator.

I am very interested in matte painting but I am a little confused on what exactly it is, and what kind of techniques people use to create these wonderful images.

Up until now I have done all my Photoshop/illustrator work by mouse, but now I have a nice new tablet which I have been playing around with, I can tell this will really speed up my workflow as well as let me dive into the world of digital art, more specifically digital painting.

If anyone can bring me up to speed or direct me to a good place to start, that would be awesome.

Cheers!

This is one good place to start, mattepainting.org (http://www.mattepainting.org) an another for mattepainting. I also like to read art techniques and theories (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=166) part of cgsociety, there are plenty of things to learn.

It seems that question about mattepaintings nature is asked and answered quite a lot with some kind of variety. Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matte_painting) gives one starting point. :)

Posting something to WIP thread here or mattepainting.org might be useful too.

Yes. Illusion Arts was a great place, Syd Dutton and Bill Taylor were two of the coolest employers I have ever worked for. It was more of a creative circle than a VFX pipeline, which I really liked.

I am working on a couple of personal paintings that I will be posting soon for critique and helpful tips. I'd also like to hear from other matte painters who are into constructing miniature elements.

Hi, my name's Adam and I'm a digital artist from Poland, currently living in Shanghai. I deal with various things like storyboards, concepts, illustrations and matte paintings. Right now, through practice and theory, I'm trying to make matte painting my speciality. I've enrolled to David Luong's February workshop and I'm also taking part in current matte competitions on CG Channel, CG Tantra and Matte-Effect. I saw some older challenges here as well, hopefully they will be resumed. I'm also working on some other, personal projects, which I will post here as soon as they are completed.

Cheers.

Hello, I'm Dylan, I haven't uploaded anything yet, but I'm an amateur painter until sometime within the next year when I'll be in a four year school. I have a little experience with 3DS and ZBrush, but I'm having an affair with Corel Painter right now. Will post things to my gallery as soon as they're finished.

Hi!
I just recently found out what Matte Painting is and now I'm hooked! I'm right now trying to learn, but so far I use photos in my paintings. My goal is to learn how to only use painting and 3D. Gotta learn proper 3D skills first haha.
Anyway I'm so glad I found this forum and it will be a great help in my journey to learn 3D and Matte Painting. See you around!

Hi
I'm Jo, I'm from Belgium, but am currently living in the UK, where I am doing my master in Digital Effects at Bournemouth University. Got into matte painting and set extension some years back, but only recently started learning the techniques. my main tools are Photoshop, Houdini and Nuke. I am really only starting out in this specific field, so well, once I start uploading stuff I would love to hear feedback and tips.
Cheers
Jo

I'm Peter Plantec. I'm more of an industry journalist than a matte painter, but I take my painting seriously. I'm friends with a number of pro matte painters and concept designers who inspire me.

I use Vue from time to time to start a painting because it's a fast way to pull in all the light and atmosphere I want. I consider that legit because I design it all myself from scratch and use the Vue image as my initial canvas. I work mostly in Photoshop with a little Painter 11 from time to time. I love creating environments. I'm better at exteriors than interiors, but I really love doing interiors...maybe one day I'll be good enough to satisfy me.

Hi, I´m Brigitta and i´m an Digital Artist. I started working as a generalist, but got more and more into the field of Matte painting.
I´m using mainly Photoshop and Maya, but started to learn Vue and Nuke as well.
I´m still learning a lot, but because i love exactly that- to create Matte paintings and to paint whole backgrounds- it is a pleasure to learn all what i need to succeed in this field.
I hope to get an great exchange of experiences and informations with all you guys here.

Hey guys,

I'm one of those silent stalkers, roaming the forums from time to time. I'm originally from Trinidad and Tobago but now I reside in Vancouver, BC for employment. I'm a mattepainter and visual effects artist. You can get a bit more info about me at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4054243 and http://ca.linkedin.com/in/darvinkmanwah

I'm currently working on a mattepainting as I've been busy with compositing and not a whole lot of mattepainting lately. Check out my recent post and follow ...

Hi Everyone,

My name is Jacek and I'm from Poland currently living in China and working here as Art Director for 3d company.
So finally the time has come and I decided to enter professional world of matte painting. I have been doing it for a while now and I really enjoy it. Especially the early concept stage, painting and getting the composition right.

Here is my entry to the CG Channel last month competition that placed as runner up. The theme was Star Wars. Tell me your thoughts.

My Reel will be coming up soon so I hope I could get some suggestions and critics from the community here. Peace
