View Full Version : 2 bodypaint questions
hi,
does anyone know how to center/reframe the camera around a selection of vertices, faces, etc... like the F key in Maya...? or what's the bodypaint workflow for centering a selection, so that when I work on, say, the nose, and rotate the camera, it rotates around my... 'nose selection'... It's rrrreally hard to paint an object when I can't navigate properly around it.
and my second question... is there a way to customize the camera rotation behavior, so that when I move the mouse towards right, or up, the scene-view rotates in that direction, instead of the camera rotating in that direction and therefore the view rotating backwards?
thanks in advance.

Hi there,
to center your view, just press the S key :)
And to change the camera rotation you can go into preferences and switch on "reverse orbit".

If you check the FAQ of this forum you'll find all the answers. S is the key you were looking for (like F in Maya), O is for the object, H for the scene. Check the C4D prefs for camera navigation.
Thanks guys. I don't have C4D, just BP, and I went through the docs a few times (but quickly), I couldn't find what I was looking for.
Reverse orbit worked great :D
But the S doesn't center around a selection of faces or vertices, it seems to be doing what O does, it frames an entire object, and I get to pivot around that object's pivot... In Maya, when you select a vertex and press F, you pivot around that vertex.

Starting with v10, BP IS C4d (same thing, 2 different names...)
you need to be in poly edge of point mode, then use Frame Selected Element.
(in the upper left of the view window, > Edit > Frame.... you have all the different options to center your view there)
The camera always rotates around the working axis. If you right click on the axis, you can decide whether it is centered on the selection, on the object etc etc.... - you also get these option if, in the Selection, Move, Rotate, or Scale tool, you go to the Modelling Axis Tab).

are you talking about uv faces and vertices? if so than the S shrtcut will not work, it works only for geometry faces and vertices. use the attached flexcam.c4d file to orbit around a certain center of interest. it's a bit like Maya's tumble tool.
cheers,
Bob
oh, yeah, I wasn't selecting points but UVs :D silly me. meanwhile I discovered the Edit Palletes... so I could add some points. that'll work ;) Luckilly, I read the FAQ, hehe, so I know how to save the layout. I work very rarely in BP. Last time I was here I don't remember that FAQ even being in existence (or maybe I didn't see it). Cuz I have a wacom and the first thing I had to ask was how to get BP to not flip out of control, hihi. It's great that there is a FAQ, very helpful. Also, thanks so much guys, you've helped me a lot too. I didn't even hoped for such fast replies.
ps - bobtronic, you're very kind to share that file, but I have BP 2.5, and it tells me it can't read it. no biggie though, selecting points and pressing S and then going back to painting is all I needed.
the S key doesn't work properly though, although I can use it, it only recenters the pivot while I'm in point/edge/face selection mode, as soon as I get back to painting, the pivot goes back to where it was before :( this means each time I want to move the camera around I have to go into something like point selection mode...

The sad fact is that there is no way to rotate the camera around selected UVs. What you can do is create a camera object and set it as your view camera, change the camera's rotation to "Position", and designate a null object as your pivot point. Then move the null around as required. Not great, but better than nothing.
Thanks Adam.
I think selecting a point and using that as a pivot, and then switching between brush mode and point selection mode (or whatever BP calls them) is easier...
Let me ask one more noob question... not sure if anyone gets to read this, but I'll try anyway:
Let's say I fill a layer with white, the whole obj is white... and now I want to "add" some red... I can't, unless I add another layer (I'm having a hard time understanding layers in BP as well, btw, they should work like in Photoshop, I guess, but they're not, and weird things happen if I touch them :D so I'm trying to stay away from that... hehe, you can see that I'm using BP very rarely, right?). How do I change this behavior, and get BP to replace a color by painting on top of it?
