Hi everyone!
I'm in the process of buying a new computer and I've already decided what to get, except for the graphics card. I thought that I would go with a 8800GTS 320MB, but after looking around here it seems like that card has had some big trouble with Maya.
To be honest, I haven't played around in Maya that much lately. But I know that it would be even less if there should be problems with bugs and so on, due to the graphics card. And I just might wanna start working more in Maya again.

At the moment I'm using the computer for compositing, photoshop, maya and some gaming mostly. I'm not a die hard gamer but I wouldn't mind getting better graphics when I do play. I have a GeForce4 Ti 4600 now.

Does anyone have experience with Radeon X1950XT together with Maya? Would that be a better choice than the 8800GTS, concerning Maya? I've read that the X1950XT should be able to softmod to a fireGL7350, but I don't have any experience with softmodding, or if thats even true.
Should that be the right way to go for me? To get a X1950XT and softmod it to a fireGL?

Any other card you could recommend me? I don't have the money for a workstation solution, as you might guess. Even the 8800GTS is a little bit too expensive for me.

I would be running everything on WinXP SP2 32-bit.

Hello, Personally i have tried both the 8800 GTX/GTS and the X1950XT. I would have to say that i have had problems with both using 3d software, little glitches in the screen at times and when navigating the viewports. But i do get less problems with the X1950XT. Personally i think it would be a better choice and save some money and go with a 7900GS, its around $150 or less now and plays games extremley well and doesnt have any display problems with maya. Its what i am currently using. IMHO i think that the 8800 isnt worth it now. I dished out almost $800 bucks to get it when it first came out being the first DX10 card but i took it back after realizing that theres nothing avalible for it yet and its pretty much collecting dust, not to mention the terrible driver support.

I have encountered problems with the 8800 with maya as well, i would recomend the 7900 or the 7950 for the same resons as mentioned above. Try searching the technical section for similar threads there have been quite a few.

<!--Disclaimer-->
I do not have up to date experience with latest drivers for the 8800 :D

cheers

Thanks for your replies!

On what version of Maya have you used the 7900/7950 series?

I haven't followed what really has happened in the world of graphics cards. There's just too much going on (all of the time). I must say that I feel somewhat of a noob when it comes to it and most of the terms in use. Even if I of course try to look into it now, since I'm in the process of a upgrade. It's easier with other computer parts :).

What are the importing specs to look at in a graphics card, when it comes to 3D apps (amount of memory, core/memory/vertex frequency, vertex/pixel shaders etc)? What helps in what conditions? I mostly do animation work in Maya and want that to run as fluid as possible. Is there something I should especially take in consideration?

I have used maya 7 and 8 mainly on interior scenes with the 7900. This is my prefered card to use with maya outside of the Quadro world. And it is pretty rock solid.

As for your last paragraph i just google these terms for info. I am not much of an expert.

Yeah I just bought the 8800gts a couple of weeks ago and i'm having some problems with the viewports in Maya, makes the models look like they were put through a blender :(

so.... after much google-ing i was brought back to a CG talk page (lol) and thanks very much to the person who originally posted the 'most problems solved' info:

http://forums.cgsociety.org/archive/index.php/t-510244.html

Maya viewports are now working great (at least within the last 10-15 minutes :))

so to sum things up, i am once again happy with my 8800.

I use a radeon x1950xt and have no visual problems with Maya 7 so far. It's not the fastest card obviously, but I'm happy with it, and the price~$160. You can probably get it for less now. 8800gts never used before. Also consider HDxxxx like HD2900.

GopherCG, I read in another thread that you were going to try softmodding the X1950XT to a FireGL. Did you ever come to that?

The cheapest X1950XT would cost me around $250/€180 and a GeForce 7900GS would go for $160/€115. I've found a 7950GT (256MB) for $170/€125 by an unknown brand, Axle. (Worst homepage I've seen in a long time! http://www.axle3d.com (http://www.axle3d.com/) The card can't even be found on their site...) The reseller is selling out the cards, that's why the price is quite low, compared to the 7900GS.

Anyone tried the X1950XT with maya 8 or 8.5? I think there has been problems for some people going from 7 to 8 due to hardware.

I just got a 8800GTS. I was wondering if everything is good with the Beta drivers now when running Maya 8.5?
I hope the problems are long gone.
