View Full Version : Burning Long File Names
Pretorian 07-13-2007, 08:00 PM Hello,
How can I burn CD and DVD with long file names and directory names? I usually use Nero. Perhaps someone knows about some plugin or update for it?
By long file names I mean something around 200 characters or more. Nero say 31 characters maximum.
Thanks

Why on earth would you have a file name with 200 characters or more?
I'd vote you rename the files...

hi pretorian,
I totally agree with lots... But if it is a matter to keep the directory structure for any particular reason, you could put your files in a compressed file (.zip, .rar). I'm not completely sure, but it is not a Nero restriction, but a media standard restriction.

Maybe I am wrong on this, but I think the path to the file is included as part of the number of letters that you can use in a filename. I know that I have had a few filenames truncated it I believe it was becasue they were in a sub, sub, sub, sub-directory. Maybe that is what the OP is looking for info on.
Perhaps so, but like tuba says, I believe this is a CD format restriction, not anything nero can really do about it.
I find that it is bad practice to have such deep directories anyway. If you do not need the file structure readily available on the CD, using an archiving format (doesn't really need to compress), such as Zip or rar can keep those pesky long names, while being only a single file name on the CD.

Oh, I concur, but go tell that to the AutoDesks of the world - they create a million sub-directories and throw files into rediculously obscure locations on your harddrive.
But yea, if that is the case, then it's a CD-standard (BlueBook or whatever it's called) issue, probably not one because of Nero.

Yes, it's an ISO-9660 restriction.
From wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_9660#Restrictions)
File names are restricted to eight characters with a three-character extension, upper case letters, numbers and underscore; maximum depth of directories is eight.
However, the 32 character restriction is a subset of the ISO-9660 format known as Joliet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joliet_(file_system)).
These formats and extentions were designed to allow CDs and DVDs the ability to be read on multiple operating systems.
You should be able to get around this by moving your data to be burned to the root directory (C:\ on Windows most likely). Unless your file has more than 31 characters in it, then it's not going to help. Changing the filename to 32 or less characters will also insure you won't be hitting this limit.
You could also look at Nero's options and see if there's a "force ISO-9660 compliance" or "force Joliet compliance" option and disable it.
Doing this, though, means it won't work in most operating systems without some other application being able to see it. In other words, don't change it unless you know what you're doing.
