View Full Version : Buying a PC in UK, but where?
Hallo,
I am moving to UK soon to start university and I need a new computer, but have no clue on where I should buy it from. Can someone please recommend a good place to buy a PC?
I am not very good when it comes to building them, so I guess I have to get a pre-built one. Here in Norway there is a firm which sells computers where you choose you starting platform, and can upgrade the parts that you want to. Is there any good shops which have the same thing in UK?
Thanks

Whats your budget and what you planning on using it for?

and ofc Dell (http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/default.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs%20)
also check out ebay and overclockers. (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=43&catid=781)
Going to use it for CG work (not so much rendering), games and programing.
My budget is a litter over £1000 I think, I can get a decent computer for that, right?

This looks like a great system, link (http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTVIEWPAGE&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&KEY=219925)
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6750
320MB nVIDIA 8800GTS
2GB DDR2 Memory
and a 22" tft for £978.78 inc delivery.
Theve also got a quad core with 4gb of ram, but the gpu isn't as good link (http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTVIEWPAGE&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&KEY=218888)
Finally ,you can also customise a dell with an e6600, 2gb ram and an 8800gtx :D +20" lcd that comes to £1,057 inc shipping which is a great deal.
I'd personally go for the dell.

This is obviously just a collection of anecdotal evidence, but might be worth a look, before you buy:

Thanks for the great help so far. Mesh computer looks kind of nice. Its still a few weeks until I have to buy it, so I might have the chance to get some more money before that.
How about this one? LINK (http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTVIEWPAGE&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&KEY=224893)

That package looks quite good but beware of cheap 22" monitors with no more resolution than 20" models.

You could check out scan.co.uk (http://www.scan.co.uk)
I had a good experience with them and their systems have high build quality. They're not 'budget' like Mesh though.
thanks for all the help so far. I just found out that "Komplett" has shops in UK aswell, so I think I will order from there.

Does this look like a good setup?
Should I upgrade the prosesor to a Inter Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0GHz?
I have been told that sins im not a citizen of UK I dont have to pay VAT, meaning that I get the above setup for a little over 1000 pounds.

I hate to say it (never thought I would) but DELL are making some very good Precision 9200, probably quads version available now.
If they don't have your cpu spec on the web give them a call and spec it up yourself.
The 9200 case is very good quality - good cooling, plenty of spac, good access and as quiet a mouse. Combine that with the 24" wide TFT you'll have a nice set up for under a grand.
There I've said it.
