I have accidently deleted a folder on my portable hdd that contains a bunch of maya scene files i have been working on.
I'm trying to recover them using Active@ File Recovery for Windows Software.
It seems to work except when i try to open the files in Maya 8.5, they won't open.
It says 'unrecognised file type'.

I'm really starting to panic now, i don't know what to do next.

Any ideas, suggestions???

cheers,

...recycle bin?

I doubt there are any free apps out there, not sure though, but there are numerous file recovery programs - however, if the files have been recovered, and the problem is recognising them, not sure what you'd do now. Try importing into another program that supports the maya file type, on the off chance it works, you can re-save it and hopefully...

If Maya is like 3DsMax, you may have an auto-save folder that will contain versions of your projects that have been saved at various times.

There is an autosave default in Maya and should be there unless you unactivated it. I have my unlimited saves.

thanks for the replies guys.

regarding the autosave, does it save it to the location where your main scene file is located, or somewhere else??

i did a shift delete, so no recycle bin for me :(

my portable drive is in FAT32 format.
my hdd's are in NTFS.

not sure if the transfer to my hdd is causing the files to become unreadable.
gonna try using a usb thumb drive formatted in fat32 format to see if that might do it.

cheers

There are programs out there such as:
Partition Magic allows you to convert an NTFS partition back to FAT32
or I think you can use your utility Disk (or download it from the HDD Maufacturer website) and boot off the disk thus launching a Dos Menu where you might be given the option? Not 4 sure though.
Don't know much about the differences between FAT and NTFS but I think you should be able to read the files??? Wouldn't see why not.

As for the Autosave... look for the folder sup..pizza said goto my documents>maya>and dig for it (sorry, don't have it handy right now cuz I'm working)

The autosave function is something you have to activate as is the infinite undo so if you didn't activate it previous to deletion then it's irrelevant and I'm affraid you have to start fresh- I've made these mistakes and they suck but think of them as a learning experience and remember to learn from them. Sorry can't help more than that.

I've tried NTFS to FAT 32 with Partition Magic and ended up re-imaging my drive. FAT to NTFS isn't a big deal and actually goes pretty quick but NTFS to FAT didn't work for me at all.

Hope that helps,
Bill
