Found out that Quicktime (7.1.6 - the latest version) ( http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ ) has a frame counter built into it. Now you still have to view it in the external player (so not streaming off a website) but still a simple and easy tool for quick feedback.

what version of QT are you running? I think it was implimented in version 7.1.6
