So the following spot may not be the typical CG spot, considering most of the work was done with mechanical pencils and markers. That being said we used After Effects so that makes it CG!

We have done a lot of 3D and motion graphics here at MAKE and are now getting our feet wet by venturing into more traditional animation as well! Hope you enjoy Spilled Oil....

......................wow.
Inspiring stuff. Very nicely done.
The animal animation was completely believable- each animal behaved the way it should.

The oil reminded me of the character Hexus in the kids film "Fern Gully". Following much the same theme.

yeah...absolutely amazing work...my criteria about such sort films is based on whether the idea is clearly shown, and can it be easily consumed by the most of the people who going to watch the film....on that basis I can say you ultimately made it...so I can say nice work, and the style of drawings are well done...and considering that all of the animation is made by markers, i mean, clasical animation...NICE....ooo and the appeal, thats the most fascinating part in that movie, at least for me. I think this days our society suffers huge necessity of showing the idea of the oil polution. I admire very highly such way of expresion about the matter - congatulations !

This is really nice. This piece proves that sometimes the best solution is brute force animation and let the computer do little to nothing.

Great stuff!

AWESOME!

Only thing I think could be better is the audio and sound, especially where the oil-slick-wave heaves up onto the dolphin and where it crashes onto the beach and walruses. I could be louder and have a more menacing sound. Other than that http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/rating/rating_5.gif

Very well executed, combines the sense of appeal in the beauty of the visuals combined with the horror of the concept.

I feel the struggle drives this concept. the will to live and the horror of not getting that chance. Animation wise its there but has potential for more. The motion is so continuous and fluid that it communicates the struggle less strong. the slowing down of exhausted birds could`ve helped it to step way beyond the beauty of the motion.

Overall, awesome work!
Thanks for sharing

Yeah, really great work guys, the style and animation is really nice. How many people worked on this? Really cool that it's made from markers!

Thanks for the great comments guys!

It's really nice to see everyone digg the animation, as well as appreciate the concept. It is very important to us to have the idea come through when we create an internal piece.

As mentioned, the piece was animated traditionally. The animators were Andrew Chesworth (who recently posted his Mortimer & Bracket animation) and Aaron Quist. Yours truly just did a bit of After Effects work (I couldn't draw my way out of a post it). These guys have actually been doing quite a bit of design/concepting and smaller projects here at MAKE, but look forward to seeing big things in the future!
