Is there an easy way for example, to animate 10 cylinders along one path so that each cylinder stays on the path and holds its position?

See here:

I've tried making 9 of the cylinders children of the first cylinder, but then the 9 cylinders don't follow the path, just their parent. Any help would be appreciated.

Depending on the result you wanted, you could write a little expression on the first object that is animated on the curve all ready with a Create Motion Snapshot. Making the start frame = frame; and the end frame = frame + 9; Bad part is that there is only really 10 objects on the curve towards the middle, they overlap towards the end of the curve.

Try the simple route and just copy the keys onto the 9 different objects and offset them by one or two frames.

or even (this may be making this a bit over complicated but) have the curve be a particle flow Break the maxdistance expression and Instance what you need to follow the curve onto the particles. However if you needed the object to rotate. I have no clue how you would figure that out :D.

Hopefully I helped, good luck!
