View Full Version : Favorite Matte painting of all time?
everlite 07-12-2007, 07:48 PM Hey guys,
Not seen a similar thread, so ...
From Albert Whitlock to Dylan Cole, Matte Painters have created some of the most iconic images in cinematic history, which do you think stand out above the rest?
My eariest memory of a matte painting was from the film Raiders of the lost ark, the very last scene we see the ark been carried into the secret storage hanger, that was very much the spark that lit my interest in visual effects and matte paintings, long before i even new such a thing existed. So that probably stands out as been one of my favorites.

I love anything Peter Ellenshaw, especially the Rome setting in Spartacus. The big epic paintings and settings like that really inspired me as far as visual effects go.

I didn't know about matte painting though until the digtial age came around then found out how much Kubrick and Hitchcock and guys like that had used them way back when.

There are really too many to choose from, so I'll go with the DS hangar interior from Ep4. Mostly because during a few visits to the LFL archives I had the chance to see all the original glass mattes from Eps 4&5. It's so awesome to be able to see the simplicity of the brush work up close in real life. Those guys are such pros they knew just how much detail to add and how much paint to put down to work with the film grain. I wouldn't say their technique is crude, but i'ts great to see the Stormtroopers at the rear of the formation are just (expertly placed) blobs of paint, barely even two values.

My favourites are the one from Die Hard 2 the aircraft at the end of the film, never ever realised that was a matte painting. I also like the one from ET where he overlooks a housing estate at night after being chased in the woods. The indianna jones chronicles tv series just set the standard after that. I also like the one with George lucas and Carrie Fisher in an embrace on a iconic location (lots of snow), which film was that? answers on a postcard too.................................
thats got you guessing LOL

Coincidentally aged six years old I was given a book about the making of star wars, I drew lots of deathstars and battle cruisers, probaly my earliest matte. (perspective was a lot better then LOL)

Gotta be a joke right? :)
Is it a real film and a real matte painting?
The only films them two were associate together with was Star wars, and George himself in the frame? huh?
I'm probably going to kick myself, anymore more clues :)

Hook,
In the film there is a matte shot with Peter Pan and the kids flying over london, they flew over Westminster bridge and there was a couple in an embrace lit by a street light, a little fairy dust came down and hit the couple who thinking happy thoughts started to levitate. Now we all know ILM are a little bit naughty they used George and Carrie for the shot.
The Mattes of Snow covered london are really beautiful.
Well done for guessing (I could hear the countdown clock ticking there)

Dylan Cole's Urban Plateau was one of my first contacts with matte painting, so i guess that's why i consider it one of the best mattes.
Other than that, I really love his matte for superman returns (the arctica one), and also the star wars mattes.
how about you guys post some links in here too, eh? :)
