Hi all
I need to get a new GPU, and heared of the new 2900XT. The benchmarks look very good, it seems to be much faster than the equivalent 8800. I've always used nVidia cards so I'm leaning towards them...
The purpose of this purchase is for holding up some pretty heavy 3DS Max scenes.

Any tips?

very power hungry and it would be compared most directly to the 8800 GTS, not the GTX or Ultra.

not a lot of workstation evaluation has been done around the card but it's a decent, upper-middle-of-the-road gamer card as well.

cheers,

In most situations the Geforce 8800s are preferable to the ATI. Mostly due to power and heat concerns. And I agree with Dave. The highest end ATI/AMD card really only compares to the midrange and low range 8800s. It has nothing on the upper 8800s.

there IS a version of the 2900XT that utilizes GDDR4 that is competitive with the 8800GTX and possibly the ultra, but there's no good screening mechanism to get that determinence.

According to some benchmarks i saw (http://www.dailytech.com/ATI%20Radeon%20HD%202900%20XT%20Performance%20Benchmarks/article7043.htm), the ATI kicks 8800 ass. there is quite a buzz on that new GPU...

i was referencing that article as I'm one of the staff bloggers over there. :)

you have to get one of the specific GDDR4 cards, however, and THAT is a crap shoot.
