So, another challenge has started, and naturally I'm in again :) I must admit, that I really have trouble finding a good idea for this one. But I'm sure about one thing: There must be at least one tiger in my piece! I just love those beautiful animals... The hard part though is finding a strange behaviour for them. Well, my first sketch has a tiger in it, buuuut I don't think this works that well. But I'll be back with more stuff soon :)

Only thing I wanted to suggest is try and make the mouse act funnier to add that extra energy to ur concept.
Best of luck for the challenge.

Gord-MacDonald: Thanks buddy :)
CUBISIS: Thanks my friend :) And yes, I really need some fun and crazyness in this piece.
Hey Martin,
Welcome to the challenge!
That tiger looks very nice! What is the story here?
Good luck!
MartinNielsen

musi: Thanks :) I think the story is about a mouse returning a hair strand to a tiger. But I won't use this setup anyway.

looking good. only crit is the mouse on the left looks a bit like a tiger and the tiger on right looks kind of mousy.... i would make it more obvious. perhaps use refernces

Wow, that tiger is awsome! And the rat is nice too! I agree that the picture could benifit from some laughter, but else it's a great concept.
Godt arbejde mester!
I just got an idea looking at your concept: what about if mouse is actually a circus tiger trainer, and holds a burning loop in one hand and a whip in the other :).
Very nice! In terms of what the scene could be about, maybe you could have the mouse riding on top of the tiger using fur for reigns. That would be strange behaviour :)
Good luck

W-I-L: Thanks for the feedback, (you mean the tiger on the LEFT and the mouse on the RIGHT, right? ;)) But I don't think, I agree with that though.
Zycho: Thanks, mate :) And yeah, some more funny stuff will do the trick here :bounce: Btw, it's a mouse. Og godt at høre fra en landsmand... :wavey:
musi: Thanks again. Good idea
M477: Thanks my friend :) Another good idea.

Hey Martin!
WOW what a great image! Of course i have a soft spot for cute little mice so im loving this idea especially!
I'm especially excited by the two main characters -theyre beautiful and full of personality!
Will you leave the bg very simple or add some more detail to the concept through it?
And are you going to work this up in 2d or 3d?
Cant wait to see more as always!
MartinNielsen

Hey Selina :)
Thanks for comming. I just knew you would like that little mouse, and I was really thinking about your earlier work, when I painted it
I think I'll add a more detailed background in the end. But I have some other ideas, I would like to try out first. Still with a tiger as a main character though
The final image will be in 2d, maybe with some 3d elements.

Marcus_B: Thanks :)
Selina42: Well, for this challenge I won't use any fantasy characters. Strange characters do strange things, so I think it's too easy to go down that road. In my final piece I will only use natural looking elements, just with that little twist that generates the story of a strange behaviour. It's not an easy task, but why should it be?
OKMER: Thanks, you too
PBCastle: Thanks to you :) Expect something new very soon ;)
Ivy00: Thank you  More to come soon :wip:

Ok. Time for another sketch. This time I'll play with a theme of a white/colored tiger. I'm not sure what the transmission between the two states should be. One idea could be a mysterious strange behaviour within the tiger itself. Or I could add some mice around painting it. Maybe this tiger just want to be something else and made them do it!

I love the mood of your sketches and the concept of the mice painting the white tiger with colour suits the mood very well.

It looks very, very nice:) I like the idea with the mice painting the tiger, but how about making it in a more cartoonish style and with different expression on the tigers face?
You could have the mice working as a (construction) team with one mouse being the boss holding a blueprint of the finished work. I don't know. Maybe it is a silly idea. :D
Anyway very nice work. I look forward to seeing your next update. :)

Sorry for the long time in between posts! Loving your last image Martin! I'm really interested to see how you bring the twist into the concept and create the strange behaviour. I like your take on how to approach the idea and totally agree!
At this stage i wouldnt like to say what colour would best suit the tiger though -i think it might depend on what else you have going on in your scene if that makes sense.
Cant wait for the next update!

Finally another concept. It's been a while since last time, but as you all know: a time for everything...
I really need to focus on one single concept from now on, and I'll definitely continue with this one. Nothing really strange goes on in this concept yet, but it's a great stage to start from. All I need is something really strange, that this wonderful tiger on the wonderful Diablo looks at...
Oh man!! Hey Martin, is that a previsulization?? great and beautiful illustration !! I really enjoyed! I hope you can develope a good idea with the Diablo and the tiger ( if yo go for this concept take care with the reflections over the car, only a comment :) ) Great work !! and looking forward for more updates!

Ferx: Thanks :)
Well, I have this habbit of not knowing when to stop painting, so my "sketches" often end up being very detailed. The scene is still very open though, so there's still room for experimentation. :)
Yes, the tiger reflection isn't finished yet. Some more distortion and opacity would help maybe.
An idea: This tiger could be a model-type ready for a photography session, while a clown-like tiger suddenly falls through the ceiling from the studio above. :bounce:

haha, what about the mice getting their own back on the cat? :D
i see them chasing the tiger in a monstertruck, or setting a cat-trap instead of a mouse-trap...bating the tiger with a piece of fish underneath a box with a stick.
or maybe just a huuuggeee mouse.

I think I'll add some more objects around, showing the tigers riches. In the air I'll show a vision. Something that a rich tiger just can't buy... And yes, I'll fix that reflection. Or maybe I could play around with that reflection in an artistic way

Haha that is great idea. That certainly is strange behavioiur. :D I really like the colors and composition aswell.
If I can add a bit of constructive critisism... The left side of the tigers neck (from the viewers angle) looks a bit odd. I looks like the neck or jaw is a tad bit too short.
I like where you are going with this. :)
bluemattersoda
08-14-2007, 01:46 PM
interesting idea - the fact that you paint it as though it's normal for the tiger to be like that adds to the comicalness (is that a word?). Though if your still in the market for ideas (you were asking for what the tiger was looking at), can I suggest maybe a mouse painting a portrait of him while hanging off the top, or something to contrast rich and poor (i was going to suggest some poor worker rat or something...but too serious i thought :P)...anyhow, the sketch looks great by itself. are you planning to illustrate or 3d?

Back again. Now, a rich tiger always want the best for dinner. Not that frozen crap meat from the freezer. No, this tiger only want the best and "fresh" of course. So, what's for dinner this time, it's so hard to decide...

Yes, there's defintely something wrong with that neck. I think it looks like the neck has just grown wrong. I need a more "turn head" pose.
bluemattersoda: Thank you :)
Funny idea you have there. But for now I think I'll add some more "pets" around, waiting to be the next dinner.

Bloody hell Martin! -I'm not around for a couple of weeks and look what you come up with! Loving it -totally made me laugh! Fab stuff and glad to see youve got your concept!
Hey Martin,
This is the best of them, man! Love, just love colours! And idea! And specially the mood!
What is he looking at? What this rich tiger can dream of? May be there should be some point of interest up there, in that corner. I don't know, it just feels somehow empty. May be just more contrast in coloring...
Hah, just noticed, that his hat doesn't cast shadow and doesn't reflect in the car surface :D! But then can also be a choice to leave it like this - after all, without all his money he is just a tiger.
Very well done, Martin!

Hi Martin. Haha this is so nice! I really like this.
The only thing I can say something about is that the reflection of the tiger dont follow the car form too good, making it look a bit flat on the front of the car. But otherwise its freekin nice. That tiger is spot on!
Keep up the good work!

This is my final "concept". I know this is a very strange (he he) way to do concept sketches. But I really had trouble getting the concept right this time, so I just started drawing... The scene shows this very rich tiger, who has living animals here and there around its big mansion, along with its most beloved possessions. The "dinner" clock starts ringning for lunch, and guess which animal's next?

Hi Martin,
Yep, that's better with shadow and reflection!:)
I like your clock design, but it's a bit difficult to see it's purpose... May be some golden mechanics behind it will help?
And addition of all those animals is really good! I just love the expression of that bird
And whatever it is on the background there (looks like mirror or water tank) is a nice element, adds some richness to the composition. I guess you are going to refine it, but like it's mystery.
Good job, Martin!

Just a few updates.
I have to be honest.... I don't know you, but I assume you must be some kind of character.:) This is a very funny image, I don't know why or how you came up with this but this is great stuff. A rich Tiger with a healthy appetite haha:D . The gesture of the Tiger is really strong... I can see the pompousness in him (lovely angle on head). Getting the animals to looks sad is subtle and well executed... at quick glance they seem like animals hanging out until you look closer. This is coming along great... I just have one critique if I may. The atmosphere, though in concept has depth, is too similar to the color of the car and just as soft as the foreground curtains. Darkening and sharpening the contrast on those curtains and on the front of the car should pull them forward. Great work Martin:thumbsup:

I just realized that the black sillohette in front of the new plant is the car's spoiler. I know it's back there, but maybe just a slight... very slight hint of light to shape it a little. Great work here - it sort of reminds me of the Doors' song about a fat cat in a top hat.
I like the addition of the mice as it adds a completely new dimension to the picture. To reinforce that they are trying to help the other animals escape, I wonder if the one near the pig could have the cord between his paws and be gnawing on it trying to cut it through before the clock strikes - that might add a bit of tension as well - will he make it in time or not?

ashiataka: Thanks :) And cheers to you
Korendo: Thank you very much :) I hope you're aware of the fact, that it is actually a tiger I'm painting and not a lion?
musi: Thanks again my friend :) Always good for some encouragement
Ferx: Thanks champ :)
I like the atmosphere of your work,
could be cool to do an animation in this little world =)

I like the very interesting mood and look you've created! The mix of all those clean-shaded elements, give together a very twisted and surreal picture. And that's something great! :bounce: Both technically (your shapes and lighting are very good!) as artistic your image gives me an idea of this 'strange behavior'! ;)
All the best on the upcoming week: do you have allot work left?

jocz: Thanks buddy :) Yes, it could be great with an animation, and I have thought of that. But I doubt I find the time
Dutchman: Thanks my friend :) I think I'm very close to finish this. Maybe I'll add some tiger cubs around, and one of them discovers a mouse

Hey Martin -

I will have to talk with the people at Cyberdine Systems, my positronic brain has a malfunction or it could be the months of sleep derivation catching up with me. Or maybe it's the king of the jungle motif dyslexicly correlating with lions - king of the jungle…it’s late need sleep…humm ceral.. So glad you are at the top of the food chain and expressing incredible artwork. :applause:
You are probably busy being very critical of your work :D I just await that Final Image Post! All this EXCITEMENT!:bounce:

And so I finally reached the final. Here's the story:
This tiger is extremely wealthy. I has become so by eliminating every other big cats in the world, and therefore it is the undisputed king of all animals now. It lives in a huge mansion with all it's beloved treasures around. Especially the beautiful Diablo, which it loves so much and uses as couch. Another thing this tiger loves is food, fresh food. There are animals ready for dinner all around the mansion, and a nearby clock shows whenever it is time for a bite. A gang of mice has decided to rebel against the tiger though. And in a daring rescure mission the mice will try to free all animals in one simultaneous operation. They have to act fast though, because it is almost lunchtime, and the poor little pig has a death mark! To make things even worse the little, but rather nasty, tiger cub has spotted something unusual in the room. The big drama can begin...
WOW... This has surely come together beautifully Martin. Especially that addition of the Tiger cub... got me by surprise there. Your ability to capture the animals so well is an achievement all on it's own, especially the Tigers. I wish you all the best my friend!

Fantastic! It certainly has changed a lot since I last visited your thread!
Love your technique the rendering is awesome. And the story certainly strange!!
Best of luck!
Hey Martin, really awesome work! and I like a lot the story :D That mice are really brave!
and the tiger´s cub addition is a really cool touch my friend! great. The atmospheric sensation of the room is amazing ( I can hear the fountain and many jungle sounds :D ) and surely is a big big room if the tiger has a whale hanged on it. :) And like a lot the contrast between a superb pice of machinery (the Lamborgini Diablo) and IMO the most beautiful and letal cat, the tiger. The pig pose is really nice, looking to the tiger ... "oh i´m the next on the list" hahahahah, cool. The mouse with the candle is a wonderful touch!. Martin I really enjoy ever single detail in your painting and was a great experience to see the great development on your concept, Congratulations my friend !! and good luck !! ..............and................. yes......now time for well deserved cold beers!!! yeaaaa !! and a big bottle of tequila!! Cheers my friend !
