i'm trying to figure out which card i should get for a windows based system for maya, photoshop and AfterEffects; and if you have ideas about a decent soundcard for soundforge, besides turtle beach, that too.

a member of my family is a systems administrator who tweeked the hell out of the little system i've got now [Via chips, nVidia card that cost $350, running Maya for modeling for now]. he works on computers in the industry already, but asked me to do some research for a good card recommendation.
-------------------------------
i will want to get a card that has it's own fan due to excessive humidity in my local area, and having suffered bad case design before i've seen the computer freeze several too many times. so if you have computer case suggestions besides 'big-as-possible' as in actual names of companies, cool.

i'm thinking nVidia Quadro series. i just want to be able to work between maya and photoshop [on textures with wacom] without having to wait while the screens switch. if it works well enough between the maya and the photoshop, the AE shouldn't be a separate condideration.
tweeking only goes so far when the computer and the card aren't in the same league, so say @ $800 and up for a card with it's own fan, and anything else reasonable you think will do for a couple of years. if it's good, it should last that long.

monetarily, i should be able to keep this under $2000 US given the stuff that can be pulled together. i'm not a gamer, it's just a workstation for work, so i really want basic level, good performance, and if it means a bit more money, i'll deal with it.

thanks for your help, and the project i'm going to be working on is at my site link. the buttons on the first, third and 4th rows will give you an idea of the complexity. the main baboon character itself will be subD with a handdrawn applied texture/no fur, and the colors will be sort of Maxfield Parrish tone, not photographic. http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/parrish.htm

i know compositing, so i do know how to separate levels and put it back together where necessary.

thanks for your help, attention and time. much appreciated.

for value, get an 8800GTS or 8600GS.
for more performance get an 8800GTX.

both are EASILY under your 800 mark, have their own heatsink and fans, and are very, very solid designs.

eVGA makes some solid cards with lifetime warranties.

cheers,

Dave

thanks. i just read some of the specs via dailytech.com and newegg.com, and everyone seems to be reasonably enthusiastic about the 8800gtx. and it is reasonably priced so that a better motherboard is an option! as for my monitor, it's only 17", but my samsung syncmaster still rules.

too bad one can only buy for a couple of years into the future for now. and things will seriously get screwed up for gamers especially, once the US rules for digital television kick in in 2009, and a whole new set of rules will apply. that is, if anyone can figure out what the new rules are.

and in case everyone didn't hear already, dramatic chipmunk (http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1764124/) got a development deal with NBC. whatever. [i have nothing to do with that animal, for the record]

and as eye and brain candy for everyone: it's not empty space (http://www.ourstage.com/video/channel/1-animation/FGJFDYFTJENL-its-not-empty-space) see it. nice.
