View Full Version : [WIP] War Zone
Hallo to all of you. This is my first post in this part of the forum, so please be gentle with me ;)
I am working on a small effect shot as a personal project, where I want to mix live footage with CG elements. As my film camera kind of sucks I decided to use my photo camera a take a few pictures and stitch them together. What I am trying to make is something that looks a bit like a war zone. What I am going to do is to add some older/ damaged buildings to the background, some bomb holes at ground and damage the big building a bit. But as this is my first attempt at Matte Painting I am probably going to need a lot of help and ideas, so keep them coming.
This is my original plate (stitched together from about 10 photos)

And here is the plate as it is right now. I have cleaned it up a bit (Fairly happy with the cleaning so far, looks a bit blurry at some places, but I think its ok?) and removed the background. The sky is just something I have added for now to get sort of a feeling of how I want it.

I have tried to add some more building to the background, but so far I think it looks a bit fake, is there any general thumb rule I should know of, or a tutorial?
Is it ok to post pictures as big as this in the thread? I looked at some of the other posted, and it looks like this is the common way, but if anyone would like my to post smaller pictures and link to a bigger one, let me know
Please let me know what you think so far. Be as hard as you want, got to learn it sometime anyways.

Nice idea, the sketch with the buildings in the rear need perspective changing as it does not match. Another thing to do is you have fore ground buildings and back ground buildings trying to attract your attention. You need buidlings in the mid ground to balance out the scale so the sizes decrease in perspective.
You also need to keep away from atmospherics until near the end of your composition. You need to block in the shapes and buildings first to correct perspective then you need to plan the damaged areas. You need a lot of photo references of damaged buildings. You say this is a war piece, look for images of battleground litter bombs bullets vehicles artillery. If you do some research into stalingrad/balkans/beirut you will come up with stronger imagery.
You have done well so far, you need to do this stage by stage or you will get lost in the details. There are plenty of tuts on this forum there are also some on matte painting org. It is not easy that is why there are so few doing it. But stick at it and dont give up. When you get a mental block go for a run or shoot a few hoops then when you come back you will be fresher.
Go for it, I do look forward to what you can do.
Rich
Prolific poster bad painter.

Do you mean that the skyscrapers are wrong, or all the buildings in the background? I dont really see where the perspective is off, so I need some help with spotting it before I can try to do anything with it.

When you say foreground buildings, do you then mean the big red one? I want that one to be the "main" thing, while the others are just for the background.

Thanks for the tips, I will sure do.
I will work on the perspective and finding the right buildings what I want to have as a background now. Thanks for you reply, I really appreciate it.
Kind of feels like I am bumbing my own thread here. But here it goes:
I have a small update. Think I am starting to get something I am happy with as far as layout. Going to change the skyscrapers, and probably do something about the big building behind the trees as that one feels kind of weird. Any comments on the perspective/layout?

You are getting there, are you using a perspective grid?
Select new layer, select line tool pick either red green or blue. Enable rulers (preference centimetres) draw a straight line across the picture holding down shift key. you now have a line check it is readable not too thin not too thick. Ctrl J this will duplicte your layer Control V move the new line up wards using the ruler to make equal spaces. Keep doing this till you have lots of equally spaced parallel lines. Merge the line layers so it becomes one layer. Ctrl J change the colour of the lines to one of the primary colours. Ctrl J again then change the line colour to another primary colour. Ctrl T this layer and rotate it so it is exactly 90 degress to the bottom ruler. You now have a perspective grid (you can transfer this to a blank document and you save as a psd all you need to do on future mattes is transfer it in). Now using the perspective transform tool on all three layers you can make perspective grid (this one is a three point perspective grid) that is accurate. it will even show you where the horizon is. You can transform your photos to line up with the grid giving you true perspective.
this invaluble tool is a trick I use I suspect others use a similar technique as well.
Once you have sorted out the perpsective all you need to do is colour match thaen the real fun begins.
I look forward to what you can show us.
Rich.

No, but I have tried to make one now. Let me know if I am doing this right. I have a copy of the red lines when they are flipped to the right, is that correct? Also, thanks for letting me know about the perspective transformation tool. As you probably can guess, im not the best Photoshoper in the world. Thank you for taking time to help me:)

Yep you have the idea, put in some blue lines in the opposite direction to the red lines and you will see how the guide helps. You can see a box shape with these three lines all you do now is transform the photos to match the lines and hey presto you have correct perspective.
Anything to help
Rich.
Thank you, that helps a lot. So far I have only been browsing and taking pictures which looks about right.
