Is UVW mapping the best mapping method to be used in 3D projects? Are there any particular downsides to this sort of mapping?

UVW mapping is always subjected to the surface geometry. So if the polygons are big and small and twisting . . . your texture will stretch and twist and conform to the shape of the polygons as well. If you have uniform spacing (equal distance) for all you polygons, you will not have stretching of your texture.

Their is no one best solution for projecting a texture onto a surface. What looks best is the choice to be made. Although BodyPaint is another story altogether, I recommend you stick with the basics first.

That depends on what it you're mapping onto and object and the general shape of the object.

You will have to experiment to get the best results.

That's my 2 cents . . .

good luck :)

The specific Texturing Forum here on CG Talk, holds a lot of good information on this matter -> Leighs "Texturing for Dummies" is a good starting point.
